Shadowbred, by Paul S. Kemp, is Book 1 in The Twilight War Trilogy set in the Forgotten Realms universe. The Twilight War Trilogy is a direct continuation of Paul S. Kemp's earlier work, The Erevis Cale Trilogy, which can now be found in a collected Omnibus edition,
The Erevis Cale Omnibus (Erevis Cale Trilogy) (Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms). This book continues the tale of the shade, Erevis Cale as he struggles with his nature and the relationship with his God, Mask, as well as that of his friends Magadon and Drasek Riven as war threatens Sembia.
The novel is fantastically well written with great character development. The author, Paul S. Kemp, gives incredible insight into his characters, which allows the reader to understand all of their hopes, fears and motivations which manages to add an extra dimension to this novel. Another huge positive of this novel are the layers of intrigue and misdirection that are woven into the storyline which make the book quite thought provoking. The action sequences are also very well written as they expertly describe the combat techniques and tactics that a shade would use which are vastly different than that of a regular man.
Overall, this is a fantastic book that I would strongly recommend to any Forgotten Realms fan or anyone who enjoyed The Erevis Cale Trilogy. However, before reading this novel you should read The Erevis Cale Trilogy which can be found in
The Erevis Cale Omnibus (Erevis Cale Trilogy) (Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms), as it is set before this novel and without reading that series it would be quite difficult to fully understand this novel otherwise.
