Book Description

In this, the second book about the Ashleigh family, Lucy -- now a young woman -- is heartbroken when her childhood sweetheart, James Wyatt, rejects her. To raise her spirits, her parents arrange for her to stay in Florence at the magnificent home of her great-grandmother, the Contessa di Lorenzo.
When she meets Major Charles Ryman, a dashing young American with a mysterious past, they are immediately attracted to each other. They meet in secret, flouting the Contessa's strict rules. And when Lucy must return to England, Charles follows her.
Lucy is deeply in love. But can she trust Charles' feelings for her? Is their love strong enough to survive the rumors about his past? And can Lucy give up everything to begin a new life with him in America?

More About the Author

Elaine Shelabarger is a writer of historical romantic fiction based in West London. After a thirty year career as an English teacher, Elaine finally found time to devote her attention to writing. After some success with free-lance magazing articles, she was discovered by Faith Black, Editor at Barclay Publishing Group, who accepted her first novel, First Love, Last Love. She has since published two more novels, Shadows of the Past, Shadow into Sunlight and her latest book, Shadow of a Smile is in the process of publication.

Elaine began writing at an early age, influenced by the likes of Enid Blyton and Charles Dickens. She was brought up in a literary household and held the dream of becoming a published writer. When she was 12, she sent her first effort to the famous London publisher, Hodder and Stoughton. Written in longhand in a lined exercise book, it was returned by the editor with words of encouragement and the gentle suggestion that she learn to type.

After retirement, she finally had time to devote herself to writing and in 2008 she finally achieved her ambition of publication. First Love, Last Love, which was set in Florida, was inspired by her visits there with her American husband. Her first historical novel, Shadows of the Past, followed in 2010 and its sequel, Shadow into Sunlight, two years later. The third installment in the 'Shadows' series will soon be published. Check this page for further information.

Currently residing in Twickenham, West London, Elaine would eventually like to move back to her home country of Wales and settle next to a cottage by the sea, to continue writing.

This is the second book in the series after Shadows of the Past. The story here is about Lucy , daughter of Guy Ashleigh who features quite heavily in the first book. When James Wyatt breaks off with Lucy due to family expectations Lucy is sent away to Italy to meet her Italian family to give her time to get over the heart break. While there she meets a dashing American Major Ryman who is quite taken with her. However he has a past and the past catches up with him and has some unintended consequences.

This book was one that I could enjoy reading at my leisure. I could read a chapter at a time and still remember what was happening without having to retrace what was happening.

A good old-fashioned romance and an easy relaxing read. However I found the last section pretty contrived and needlessly dramatic.
