More About the Author

Rachel Vincent learned to read at four years old, and wrote her first story at six. It was about a class field trip to the zoo. In addition to being her first experiment with the written word, it was also the first and only tale she illustrated herself - it turns out that her talents do not extend to the visual arts.

Since sixth grade, her reading interests have centred around the dark side of literature. In junior high, much to her teacher's distress, she wrote her very first book report about Carrie, by Stephen King. She devoured books about magic, vampires, and werewolves by the dozens. Monsters held a special fascination for her, be they human or beast. And eventually "I love these books" became "I think I can write these books," and she began creating fictional worlds of her own.

Rachel dabbled with short stories all the way through junior high, high school, and college, but didn't begin writing seriously until several years later, when she started her first novel. By the time she had completed four manuscripts, she knew she had found what she wanted to do with her life.

Rachel is the author of the bestselling Soul Screamers series. There are four titles in the series, My Soul to Take, My Soul to Steal, My Soul to Keep and My Soul to Steal already published. The latest title in the Soul Screamers series, If I Die is published in Feb 2012.

Rachel has also written a special short story "My Soul to Lose" which will be available as part of World Book Day in March 2012

*This review will be spoiler free but it may contain spoilers for any previous books in the series*

Shadow Bound, the second book in Rachel Vincent's Unbound trilogy, picks up not long after the events of Blood Bound (review). It focuses on Kori, a Shadow Walker working for the Tower Syndicate and the fall out from her actions at the end of the previous book.

It's taken me a couple of days to really sort through how I felt after finishing Shadow Bound. It's quite a brutal and emotional ride that, whilst at times was uncomfortable to read, keep me glued to the page until it finished.

The plot is not so much action packed as a slow build of pressure, waiting for secrets and lies to come to the forefront. Much like Blood Bound all the characters have their own agenda or at least one that has been forced on them. With the book being told from both Kori and Ian's perspectives you can see how these conflicting agendas begin to collide and the anticipation of waiting for the inevitable to happen fills the pages with tension. I did feel like the climax all happened quite quickly, but I think this is just me nitpicking now!

The world Vincent has created remains one of the most fascinating I've read in a long time. I really enjoyed seeing this world through the eyes of a Shadow Walker and the introduction of a Blinder was something we'd not really seen much of before. I loved how much more detail was given about the concept of Binding too, as it's so pivotal to the Unbound world.

Vincent's is evil-genius-good at writing complicated relationship, Kori and Ian are no exception!

I love anything Rachel Vincent puts her pen to so I had no doubt this second novel in the Unbound series would be brilliant, and I wasn't disappointed. I was so drawn into the first book, Blood Bound, and if I am honest, when I first read the intro for this book I felt a pang of disappointment as I thought this book would carry on from the first one with Liv and Cam and about how they serve their long bound sentence together. But after reading the first page that feeling left me and I was hooked. We don't learn an awful lot about Kori in the first book, but this is her story. She is such an amazing character, so strong but vulnerable at the same time. She is feisty, tough, gritty and yet you know there is more to her deep down. She survives such brutality and torture at the hands of her syndicate boss that you can only admire her. She will do anything to protect her younger sister but things get complicated when her 'job' Ian and her fall in love. It's a great story and seeing how their relationship develops kept me glued to the page and I couldn't put this book down. Now waiting for book #3!

This is the second book in the Unbound series and it follows Kori and Ian, Kori was introduced in the first book so we know she's a traveller who is bound to Jake Towers. In Blood Bound, she unknowingly causes her own downfall by allowing Liv and Cam into Towers home and he got shot, this books starts off with her punishment for that event. She gets released purely to help Towers recruit a Blinder, Ian, which grinds on her since she doesn't want to force anyone into a contract with Towers but she has to do it to keep her sister safe. But Kori and Ian end up falling for each other and complicate matters just a tad, but in true stubborn fashion they find a way to keep everyone happy.

Vincent is one of those authors that I can't say anything bad about, I love her writing style and I love her characters. When I pick one of her books up, I can't seem to put it down. This one, for instance, I started reading this afternoon and have just finished it, which is actually quite a long time for me but I had breaks for eating and such menial tasks.

I highly recommend any of Vincent's books and, if you're going to start somewhere, her Unbound series is a good place to start. She writes unputdownable books and immediately likeable characters.

I very much enjoyed both this and Echo Bound, the previous novel. It is a breath of fresh air to live, as it were, on a different plane. I am looking forward to reading Oath Bound when I find it.
