Product Description

In the early hours of 15 April 1912, after the majestic liner Titanic had split apart and the 1,500 men, women and children struggled to stay alive in the freezing Atlantic, the sea was alive with the sound of screaming. Then, as the ship sank to the ocean floor and the passengers slowly died from hypothermia, a deathly silence settled over the sea. Yet the echoes of that night reverberated through the lives of each of the 705 survivors. Shadow of the Titanic tells the extraordinary stories of some of those who survived. Although we think we know the story of the Titanic - the famously unsinkable ship that hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Britain to America in April 1912 - little has been written about what happened to the survivors after the tragedy. How did the loss of the ship shape the lives of the people who survived? How did those who were saved feel about those who perished? And how did they remember that terrible night, in effect a disaster that has been likened to the destruction of a small town? Timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking, SHADOW OF THE TITANIC will shed new light on this enduringly fascinating story by showing how the disaster continued to shape the lives of a cross-section of passengers who escaped the sinking ship.

Most accounts of the Titanic disaster end when the Carpathia - the rescue ship that picked up the survivors - docks in New York. But what happened afterwards? This is the first account to tell the story of what happened to the survivors. The subtitle of the book is 'The extraordinary stories of those who survived' and it's true - the stories of the survivors are extraordinary. Andrew Wilson has written a gripping account of how the Titanic cast its shadow over the lives of the people who managed to survive. We meet a range of fascinating real-life characters: Dorothy Gibson, the silent film star who made the first movie about the Titanic within four weeks of the sinking, starring herself and wearing the dress she had worn the night she escaped from the ship. Then there's Madeleine Astor, who was a wife, a widow, an heiress and a mother all in the space of a single year. A whole chapter is devoted to the dark side of survival - which looks at a number of suicides of survivors. And the last section is devoted to how some people became celebrities by virtue of the fact that they survived. A fascinating insight. Brilliantly researched, incredibly moving and essential reading for anyone interested in the Titanic and its secret aftermath.

This is a fascinating account of the post disaster lives of some of the survivors. The more famous survivors are here - J Bruce Ismay, the Chairman of Titanic's owners the White Star line, whose life was destroyed by the perceptions created by his survival in a life boat when so many had died; Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon, who was alleged to have paid the life boat crew to row away from the wreck site, abandoning people struggling for life in the water, and Dorothy Gibson, the silent movie star who starred in a film about the Titanic, wearing the dress she was wearing that night, just weeks after the disaster. Here too are lesser known survivors, some of whom could never talk about the sinking or their experiences, and some who tried ,and some who succeeded, to make a living from their recollections.

All were effected - many profoundly, and this excellent book gives life to their memories and their lives. Compulsive though melancholy reading.

Highly recommended
