Shadow Skill is a fairly conventional sword 'n' sorcery/martial arts comic and this anime version consists of various linked stories most of which exist purely as build-ups to prolonged displays of battle pyrotechnics. Ella is a champion in the Shadow Skill school who has adopted young orphan Gau as her brother and apprentice; Scarface, an even greater champion, also has an interest in the boy's training. A rival takes Gau hostage in order to kill Ella before an arena confrontation; the pair, and Ella's friend Fowari, helps young Quo against the monstrous King of the Moon; an evil stepbrother misleads Fowari into attacking Ella. In the shorter feature "Epilogue", Scarface rescues Ella from the sinister Wolfman and she and Gau engage in an all-out fight as part of his training. The animation is better than that in some anime, but is nothing remarkable.

On the DVD: Shadow Skill has rather aggressively loud Dolby Sound and the option of listening to it in Japanese with subtitles or in poorly dubbed English; it comes with images and short biographies of the characters as well as Web links and ads for other animes. --Roz Kaveney

4.0 out of 5 stars WOW! 23 Sep 2002
This is a superb action film, the characters are extremely well animated. All you fans of fighting animes out there will love this. The action scenes are very impressive na dkeep you on the edge of your seat. It has a rich story line and an interesting cast of characters.
However there are a few down sides to this DVD. First off the voice acting does not match the characters, which is very anoying at first, but it is easily forgotten. Then there is the anoying names of the spells that flash up at the bottom of the screen.
If you can get past the character voices and the odd word flashing on screen you will see that this is a must have for fans of fighting anime

Where to even begin with Shadow Skill? Let's get the obvious out of the way first - the show is in possession of the most laughably horrendous English dub you'll ever have the misfortune of hearing. It's so bad it's almost worth buying this DVD just to hear. Seriously, some of the accents on offer need to be heard to be believed - like some bizarre hybrid of South African, Cockney and American.

As for the plot, it's all pretty forgettable stuff - sub Dragon Ball pap about becoming the strongest, and a dodgy bro/sis (but not quite) combo that beat the heck out of each other for LOLs. Oh, and there's those annoying signs that pop up and scroll over the screen every time someone calls out an attack. With dated animation and such tacky presentation, it's hard to find much to love here - although rest assured there's far worse out there when it comes to early 90s anime. I'm almost tempted to recommend this simply as it's in many ways the best of a bad bunch - a gateway drug if you will to the cesspool that is bad anime. And trust me, English dubs don't come any more hilariously awful than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood is thicker than water. 5 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This DVD contains the 3 part OVA (movie) and the Epilogue (promo) for Shadow Skill.
Contrary to popular belief, this anime DOES NOT come from a series, it was made as a movie first, and a series was released 3 years later.
With this DVD you'll also get an image gallery for stills of the movie, and a character bios for more in-depth details about the stars of this anime.
This is a wonderful DVD and I'm proud to have it in my collection, a true anime classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Film - Bad Voice Acting 17 May 2003
By Hotsuma
I saw this film a few years ago, and, out of all my friends who watched it too, I was the only one who liked it. So when i saw it on special the other day I thought I may aswell just buy it. First of all what'll I say is that this is a class film. All the fights are amazingly animated, some of the best I've seen to date, it has a good, if somewhat patchy, storyline and it has cool characters. The one piece of advice I will give you if you buy this film is - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WATCH IT WITH THE JAPANESE VOICE ACTING AND ENGLISH SUBTITLES. I am not joking the English voice acting is really that bad. Gao Ban, the films main character, has a voice that I cannot place with any nationality, and some of the dialogue is shameful. In conclusin, if you really do wanna buy this film, MAKE SURE it has both the Japanese and English voice acting, which the Ultimate Edition does, and then you cand decide for yourself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite. 7 May 2004
Note to self: Don't judge a DVD be it's cover.
The cover looks a lot better than the DVD.
'Shadow Skill - Ultimate Edition' is a two disc DVD, the first disc being three short episodes, the second an epliogue.
It's poor. Very poor. However, it isn't all bad. It looks very nice, at least the epilogue does, the first disc is rather shoddy, with some odd writing scrolling along the bottom of the screen to co-incide with attacks, but it's all very meaningless to someone like me, who is not a Shadow Skill fan per-se, but rather an anime fan.
The dubbing is, well, awful. It's rare that you find really great synchronised dubbing unless you're going for a Miyazaki, but this is very bad. They don't remotly link together.
The plot has it's good points though, but it's a reversal of roles as Disc 1 has a much better storyline than the Epilogue, but they are both decent, if anything this is it's best feature, but even so it's nothing that makes you think, "Wow, that's amazing." It's not particularly original either, your basic little people versus world, with people having superpowers and really, really big swords.
Still, worth getting for the Epilogue. The whole 2 Disc set isn't all that bad. It does have it's good moments, so if ya find it cheaper than Amazon, it's worth a look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually Pretty Good 2 Aug 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This disc contains

Shadow Skill The Movie - which is actually OVAs 1-3 splashed together
Shadow Skill The Epilogue - OVA 4, which is based just after OVA 1-3
Extras are character bios, photo gallery, english audio in 5.1 and 2.0, Japanese audio in 2.0.

By the way the english dub is horrible and you should only watch if you don't want to read the subs

A Kid's Review
This film is an amazing piece of work. the animation is good and the storyline (if you actually pay attention) makes complete sense. watching the epilogue first (included on this dvd) helps you to understand the film's original start. the characters seem different in the epilogue and that is because the actual design for them was changed between the epilogue and the film being made. The english voice over isn't perfect (obviously) but it's good and if you hear it without realizing the voice doesn't synch then it wouldn't matter to you when it doesn't. I originally watched this as a kid and had no idea what dubbing was at the time. I now can't imagne gau with any other english voice. I hope you all enjoy this film as much as me and come to love shadowskill.
