I am a long standing fan of the Lucas Davenport Prey novels, but have read them out of order. One moment he is a consultant for the police, the next he is a younger man back on the force. In my opinion some of the earlier books are harder to enjoy as Davenport is not the easiest of men to get along with. This is the case with `Shadow Prey', a novel that sees Davenport at perhaps his least sympathetic. The story itself is of a group of Aboriginal Americans seeking revenge on famous racists. Davenport must hunt them down before they can kill again. The narrative is by no means the strongest the series has offered and although moments of the chase are exciting, the finale is a limp one.
The main issue with the book is not the story itself, but the relationship that Davenport has with his new partner for the case. I have no issue with a main character having flaws, it almost a must for the crime genre, but this leaves a nasty taste. Both characters are in committed relationships, but they are drawn to one another. I understand that John Sandford is trying to portray Davenports self destructive nature, but he makes the character look more like a sleaze and hard to like. With a weaker plot and dubious character development this is perhaps the weakest in the `Prey' series. However, the moments of fast action do still make is a reasonable read.
