Shadows and Lace

With one roll of the dice, the shameful deed was done. Baron Lindsey Fordyce had gambled and lost, and now his beautiful daughter, Rowena, was about to pay the price. Spirited away to an imposing castle, the fiery innocent found herself pressed into the service of a dark and forbidding knight accused of murder...and much more. Handsome, brooding Sir Gareth of Caerleon had spent years waiting for this chance for revenge. But when he sought to use the fair Rowena to slay the ghosts of his tortured past, be never imagined he'd be ensnared in a silken trap of his own making -- slave to a desire be could never hope to quench....

By Deborah MacGillivray HALL OF FAME VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Teresa Medeiros has written books about every period in Hstorical Romance from Westerns to Regency to Faerytales. But one of my favorites is Shadows and Lace. Sorry, a well-written Medieval tale always captures my imagination. I read this book when it first came out, and just re-read it again, and found I was as thrilled the second time around. Maybe more so since you see so few TRUE Historical Romance currently being done. If you are hungry for a strong Medieval tale don't hesitate to snatch this one up. It will make a Medeiros fan out of you if you aren't already.

Nearly twenty years ago, a teenage Gareth of Caerleon held his two-year-old stepsister and felt protective of the child. But that same night, he learned his father had been killed in Wales fighting for Longshanks, his stepmother was murdered and that blue-eyed babe went missing. Since then, Gareth has been tainted with tales of murdering his step-mother in a jealous rage after catching her with her lover and disposed of that child.

Rowanne has lived in poverty as her father wasted money are little provided for her all her brothers. Baron Lindsay Fordyce returns home and explains he had lost one of his children to Gareth for the term of one year. The whole family, including Rowanne, are shocked with Gareth chooses her. Gareth takes her home to Caerleon, and it's soon evident the dark knight is using Rowanne to provoke her father into action, but little does Rowanne understand the full extent of Gareth's designs upon her.

Revealing any more of the plot would spoil the wonderful tale. Medeiros has a good sense of historical detail, the dynamics of characters tortured by their past, and blends all her magical touches to give you a novel that will linger long after that last page it turned. One of the best Medieval Historicals written.

Since I first picked it up 3 years ago, I've read it FOUR times. I simply couldn't get enough of the dark hero, Gareth and his feisty gambling win, Rowena. His dark past and her hope for the future ensnare the reader into a tangling web of mystery and passion. Medeiros outdid herself on this one. She writes her characters with such vivid imagination and eloquence, you feel as if you're really there - Rowena herself. Don't mistake it. Medeiros is the best writer of romantic fiction of this historical period!

I purchased this book solely based on the glowing reviews. For sheer waste of time, money and effort this book can`t be beat. Its so long winded and boring. The story could have been wrapped up at least ten chapters earlier, the characters are unrealistic and frankly so distasteful you really could not care a hoot what happens to them. The heroine is clearly a masochist who keeps running back to the idiotic self dramatising hero who really needs to get over himself. As for the hero`s sister words fail when it comes to describing this wierdo! The author has tried to create a complex deep dark character but has failed so miserably she should be banned from further writing. The ending when the heroine after prattling on how men need to respect women and then anonymously takes on the hero in a jousting tournament and despite the fact that there is NEVER any mention of her being proficient with a lance, nearly bests the- hero who is naturally the champion of the age- is so ridiculous that I just abandoned the book at that point. When I think of spending my hard earned money on buying this traversty of a so called mediaeval romance I feel like crying!!!!!! I can only hope that these glowing reviews were written by friends of the author since I refuse to shatter my faith in the judgement of my fellow men!!!
