Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Another masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan.

Director Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of Batman, The Crow and The Mask, the merely mysterious Shadow seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. --Kim Newman

5.0 out of 5 stars The Franchise That Should Have Been.. 23 Jun 2006
Format:DVD
Utter God damn classic. From the rip-roaring music, to funky special effects, to the cheesy acting to the cracking idea of the whole thing itself. See it and ignore the cynical critic in you. OIt's just great to see Batman go hand in hand with Indiana Jones and actually have a film that lives up to that tag for once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool is an understatement 6 Aug 2002
Format:DVD
The Shadow is the most stylish superhero movie to date, easily beating Batman, although the Spiderman movie is giving the shadow a run for it's money! This movie has that old fashioned cheesy-but-in-a-good-way vibe, set in 1920's New York City, Lamont Cranston AKA Yenkow the Butcher AKA The Shadow is brilliantly yet suttly underplayed by Alec Baldwin, he must have had a blast making this movie! Penelope Ann Miller is great as always, this was the first time i saw her, she was also great in Carlito's Way. John Lone (Ricky Tan from Rush Hour 2) is a great villan, playing the last decendent of Gengis Khan attempting to take over New York, holding the city to ransom with a stolen atomic bomb! Great DTS sound on this movie if you have the electronics to hear it!!! Check it out!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good movie 11 Dec 2003
Format:DVD
While leading a dissipated life in Tibet, Lamont Cranston (Played by Alec Baldwin) falls under the influence of an ancient wise man (James Hong) who teaches him how to use an ancient wisdom to fight for good. Returning to the United States, Cranston takes on the role of The Shadow, a nearly magical hero who wages war on the forces of crime. But, things are about to get much harder. Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last descendent of Genghis Khan has a plan to take over the whole world. As Shiwan Khan hash similar powers to his own, only The Shadow can hope to overcome him. [Color, created in 1994, with a running time of 1 hour, 48 minutes.]

After hearing numerous negative comments about this movie, I watched it with some trepidation. However, I must admit that I was quite pleasantly surprised. This movie is stunningly produced, with excellent scenes. The characters are interesting, even if not often believable. The action is quite gripping, but is restrained, thus keeping the movie within a PG-13 rating. With no overt sex, and restrained violence, this movie is very family-friendly. So, if you looking for a good Saturday night movie to watch, then I recommend this movie to you.
