I got this book for my son (10) who is not a very keen reader, only likes fantasy/magical stories. I thought I'd vet it for him to see whether he might like it. As someone said earlier, I got worried by the depressing start although I liked the way it was written. The language is easy, not too many difficult words that can be so tedious for the reluctant reader. But very quickly I got gripped by the story, the pace of the book, the odd interruptions from the author, the spookyness and the humour. Basically, I loved this book and its creatures and I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately I finished it too quickly. I have now passed it to my son and I told him he was going to love it. He is now half way through and said, even after the first few pages, that it was brilliant.

This book is full of dark characters and action that young (and not so young) readers love. The parents of Samuel Blink and his sister Martha are killed suddenly so they have to go live with their aunt in Norway. Once there they come under the spell of the Shadow Forest and the only way to escape is to come face to face with the Changemaker, the evil ruler of the forest.

My son 11yrs old and although he is a very good reader he is a reluctant reader. However he is really enjoying this book. Well worth buying in my opinion.

My son and I had read 'The Runaway Troll' and he was especially keen to follow on with 'Shadow Forest', so we were pleased when this book arrived in good order and punctually.

A dark tale
