More About the Author

Matt Lynn was born in 1962 and and grew up in Exeter and Dublin, before moving to London. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford. After a career as a financial journalist and ghost-writer, which included three number-one best-sellers, he started writing the 'Death Force' series of action-adventure thrillers in 2009. Featuring a group of mercenaries, the series started with 'Death Force' in 2009, followed by 'Fire Force' in 2010, and continuing with 'Shadow Force' in 2011. The News of the World gave the first book a four-star rating, describing it as "a Boy's-Own adventure guaranteed to get the pulse racing. It is up there with the finest that Andy McNab or Chris Ryan have ever penned." Matt Lynn also writes widely on business and economics, including columns to Bloomberg, Money Week and the Spectator. 'Bust: Greece, the Euro and the Sovereign Debt Crisis' was published in 2010, and short-listed for the Spear's Book Awards Business Book of the Year.

I have been critical of the two previous books in this series, they were far too obvious with gaping plot holes and a formula followed too easily from the first to the second book.
I was pleasantly surprised to be shaken out of my lukewarm expectations to find this one is actually pretty good.
The author has learnt from his previous books and is brave enough here to change the formula a bit. No caricature bad guys, no daft plot and lack of logic here, although we stay within the expectations of a high octane military thriller.
The gang of mercenaries featured in the first two books return here, blackmailed into working for MI6 on a near suicidal black op to capture the leader of the Somali pirates. A new French Sea commando is added to the team as they train and then head for the Somali coast, not knowing there is another plan that will put them all at risk.....
It is of course non stop action but some interesting twists are thrown in that raise it above the norm and away from the predictable. One or two mistakes from the previous books are repeated but the sum of the book out-weighs these mistakes and it ends up being exactly what you hoped for, non stop military action.
Delighted to say I enjoyed it.

Shadow Force, the third in Matt Lynns series of books following DEF Inc, is another very enjoyable read. ML captures the characters, team dynamics, terminology and action into a dynamic package which, in my opinion out does other authors who write similar books.....The only down side is that there is an Ex PIRA member in the team, which to me is disappointnig and shows a lack of imagination when it comes to selecting a qualified character from Northern Ireland.. but that is just my feedback.
Antoher excellent book and I cannot wait for the next installment, but please dump the Ex PIRA Member Ian.

The island of Haikl is ten miles from the coast of Avila, it says on page 2. On page 27 the distance from Haikl to Avila has become forty miles; a small detail (and not the only mistake), that made it difficult to trust anything else the author says. I tabbed to the end of this novel and wished I sodding hadn't. It was like Enid Blyton's 'Secret Seven Play Soldiers and Pirates.' Steve, Ollie, Dan, Dave, Maksim, Nick and Henri have an adventure, but instead of lashings and lashings of ginger beer at the end, all the boys really want is some Stella Artois and a good shag.

This is one of four novels so far, and if you enjoy a good mercenary romp all four are a good read. In these stories the mercenary force, always led by the same guy, lose at least one man and come out battered and bruised but victorious. Good boys own stuff and an undemanding read.
