Sald Harl would like nothing more than to soar on the wings of his noble eagle, but his youthful rides in the sky are cut short by an appointment to guard the prince. Sald watches his dreams of flight fade with his name and independence as he takes over his bodyguard duties. During a perilous journey to the edges of the kingdom a dark secret comes to life. Now the great Prince Shadow is accused of treason, and Sald must orchestrate a desperate plan of escape or he will lose the one thing he has been orderedto defend. His only option of freedom is a dangerous flight that no one has ever survived. Once again Sald hopes to feel the freedom of soaring though the air unshackled from servitude. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

A riveting, orginal tale of honor and courage 14 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I picked up "Shadow" after thoroughly enjoying Duncan's "Man of His Word" series. I was hoping for another good-natured, fun book. What I received was much more: Shadow is the tale of a man who becomes a noble's bodyguard - and takes the title of Shadow. His life becomes inextricably tied to that of his master. (thats the basic synopsis, since there isn't one given).

Although there are a few cliched characters in the book, the main cast is a well-rounded bunch that came alive for me. Duncan examines questions of honor and loyalty -- personal loyalty vs. loyalty to the crown -- in the midst of a compelling story.

The setting of the world is one of the most unique I have come across in a long time and for that alone I had to go back and reread the novel.

All-in-all, I would strongly recommend picking up Shadow -- you won't be dissappointed.

One of Duncan's two best 25 Sep 2004
By Norman Siebrasse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In my opinion 'West of January' and 'Shadow' are Dave Duncan's two best books. Not only are these undoubtedly the best of his single book novels, in many ways they are better than his series. My other favourite works by Duncan are his earlier series -- in particular 'A Man of His Word', 'The Great Game' and 'The Seventh Swordsman'. West of January and Shadow are a distillation of what is best about Duncan; a coherent and intriguing alternative universe, excellent characterization and plotting -- plus a keen moral edge that is sometimes submerged in the storyline of his series. It's as if you took one of best series and squeezed the essence into a single book.
Where Eagles Fly and One Man Dares... 12 Mar 2012
By Astral - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was one of Dave Duncan's first books that was published way back in 1987. Make no mistake however, this is definitely not "amateur hour". "Shadows" has the streamlined approach that so many of his books have. No wasted moments. Every sentence and paragraph has purpose and propels the story forward, on the wings of soaring eagles this time. The world built here is unique, a place where humans could not survive without their giant winged mounts. Unfortunately the kingdom is rotten to the core, the royalty corrupt and many questions arise over the keeping of eagles in the first place. Are they too intelligent to be considered yet another of man's beast of burdens? A peasant stock born rider of these sky kings is thrown in the midst of the political turmoil. A rise in station becomes a a life sentence and then is revealed as a grand adventure. The courtly intrigue sprinkled here and there takes some rather shocking turns. The reader will have no idea where this is going to end up before Dave is done spinning another of his wonderful yarns. Another thrilling stand alone book, where an alien world becomes reality. This book is of the perfect length and is wonderfully complete.
