5.0 out of 5 stars Hammer rarity gets it's first DVD release. 20 May 2014
Verified Purchase
This is a very hard to find title, since it is rarely shown on UK TV, and has never had a video or DVD release before now.

Released by Final Cut, who have had a lot of criticism on their other Hammer titles, this is not bad at all.

Since they could not source a master of HD quality, they have chosen to release this as a DVD only, which is fair enough.

The print is fully uncut, and has the Universal opening and closing logos.

Quality wise, it looks like a decent enough copy, with good contrast and clarity.
There are speckles here and there, which is to be expected from a 50 year old film of this type, and you can spot some graininess in the night scenes, a few of which look worse than others, but generally this is a good presentation.
It looks like this may be a TV print, as the side cropping is too tight, and I compared it to my VHS recording from Channel 4 from years ago, which was in widescreen, and that had more information on the right side of the picture, and a little more on the left. The top and bottom of the frame look identical though. So I guess the purists out there will grumble that it isn't the right framing ( I am guessing it was 1:66:1 for this period, but it doesn't mean we miss anything vital to the action, or have heads and chins cut off. Just a little side information is lost.

The menu is simple enough, but strangely has the opening music to Hammer's Brides of Dracula, as it's backing track?! Perhaps they thought it fitted the tone of the film more dramatically than the original score by Mikis Theodorakis, although you do get to hear this in the extras, playing over the photo gallery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shadow of the Cat 10 July 2014

It's now one of my favorite movies with a cat as the protagonist, sort of reminiscent of a couple of Stephen King films I have watched.
Since it was a Region 2 (PAL) disc, I am lucky enough to own a couple of All-Region DVD Players to watch it on.
I hate to say it, "I LOVE CATS!" and any movie with them in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars SHADOW OF THE CAT from FINAL CUT 14 Jun 2014
By A. W. Wilson TOP 500 REVIEWER

It is a little bit surprising that such a "forgotten" film attracts such quality reviews here on Amazon. But the fact is this DVD deserves a wide audience. It's a good story. Good photography, clear B/W picture and sound (4.3 ratio - More below on that). A good cast of reliable actors led by Barbara Shelley (looking wonderful as usual), Andre Morell, and Vanda Godsell and many others. The cat is good too. I am not usually a fan of "Extras", but Final Cut give us a very illuminating doc on the background and history that I found most interesting, even tho some of it is covered in the many books on "Hammer". "FilmboyChris" makes a point about the ratio...4.3 always puzzles me. It just doesnt seem to reflect my memory of cinema showings of "standard" ratio films, and in the documentary there are clips from the film in a slightly larger, more realistic ratio. I would honestly love someone ("Filmboy"?) to explain all the different ratios and why they vary so much. I digress. A fine example of early(ish) British horror circa 1961. Highly recomened for fans of said films.

No need to describe the plot, the other reviews give great detail. I just would like to say this disc looks great, and the extra's are
amazing for a disc this inexpensive. I would highly recommend this to any Hammer fan. Thank you Final Cut.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last the UK debut of an old classic film 25 May 2014
By Sarah

I can only remember ever seeing "Shadow of the Cat" once before, many, many years ago I believe on BBC2.
To my knowledge its never been released in UK format on its own on DVD before (although I have seen it for sale as a double feature DVD with "Cat Girl" by Insignia Films probably as they both had 'Cat' in the title and both starred the 'Queen of Scream' herself Barbara Shelley - Although I think this is actually a US released DVD that was NOT region locked)

Its an interesting ongoing argument as to whether Shadow of the Cat is an official Hammer Films release, at the time Hammer had a distribution agreement with Columbia Pictures - but were allowed to make and release the odd other film thru other distributers. ( Shadow of the Cat was distributed by Universal Pictures) To get around this they created a shell company BHP Films and it is they that appear on the credits and all marketing and NOT Hammer hence why there is the argument that it is not a true Hammer film.
Interestingly and on the side of the argument that this is a 'true' Hammer film Colombia originally commissioned a film about the Spanish Inquisition to be made by Hammer and sets were made in the Bray Studios back lot for this film before Columbia pulled the plug, in an effort to recoup the money already spent Hammer re-used these sets to make TWO films as a double feature release with Universal Pictures, The Curse of the Werewolf ( which was already on the slate as Werewolf of Paris - but name changed and reset in Spain to use the already made sets on the back lot) and a cheap (it only cost £81,000) 'B' movie "The Shadow of the Cat" a entrant in the 'old dark house' genre of films.
