Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Another masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan.

Director Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of Batman, The Crow and The Mask, the merely mysterious Shadow seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. --Kim Newman

5.0 out of 5 stars The Franchise That Should Have Been.. 23 Jun 2006
Format:DVD
Utter God damn classic. From the rip-roaring music, to funky special effects, to the cheesy acting to the cracking idea of the whole thing itself. See it and ignore the cynical critic in you. OIt's just great to see Batman go hand in hand with Indiana Jones and actually have a film that lives up to that tag for once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool is an understatement 6 Aug 2002
Format:DVD
The Shadow is the most stylish superhero movie to date, easily beating Batman, although the Spiderman movie is giving the shadow a run for it's money! This movie has that old fashioned cheesy-but-in-a-good-way vibe, set in 1920's New York City, Lamont Cranston AKA Yenkow the Butcher AKA The Shadow is brilliantly yet suttly underplayed by Alec Baldwin, he must have had a blast making this movie! Penelope Ann Miller is great as always, this was the first time i saw her, she was also great in Carlito's Way. John Lone (Ricky Tan from Rush Hour 2) is a great villan, playing the last decendent of Gengis Khan attempting to take over New York, holding the city to ransom with a stolen atomic bomb! Great DTS sound on this movie if you have the electronics to hear it!!! Check it out!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good movie 11 Dec 2003
Format:DVD
While leading a dissipated life in Tibet, Lamont Cranston (Played by Alec Baldwin) falls under the influence of an ancient wise man (James Hong) who teaches him how to use an ancient wisdom to fight for good. Returning to the United States, Cranston takes on the role of The Shadow, a nearly magical hero who wages war on the forces of crime. But, things are about to get much harder. Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last descendent of Genghis Khan has a plan to take over the whole world. As Shiwan Khan hash similar powers to his own, only The Shadow can hope to overcome him. [Color, created in 1994, with a running time of 1 hour, 48 minutes.]
After hearing numerous negative comments about this movie, I watched it with some trepidation. However, I must admit that I was quite pleasantly surprised. This movie is stunningly produced, with excellent scenes. The characters are interesting, even if not often believable. The action is quite gripping, but is restrained, thus keeping the movie within a PG-13 rating. With no overt sex, and restrained violence, this movie is very family-friendly. So, if you looking for a good Saturday night movie to watch, then I recommend this movie to you.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Shadow 24 July 2004
Format:DVD
I have loved this film for many years now. I first saw it when i was young and now im in my teens years and i still find it great fun to watch. Its not the most action-packed film but the story carrys you through the film nicely and i think this film is very under rated! you could do alot worse than to see this fantisy filled film.

The Shadow knows!

This is a very entertaining film that, like Rocketeer, failed to spark the hoped for franchise. It's got great production design values a brilliant, slightly creepy anti-hero. Maybe it was the hammy acting that turned people away. Like Rocketeer it stands up to comparison with the 'Saturday Matinee' Indiana Jones era type films. Great fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Want the Blu-ray? Read On... 29 Jan 2013

I'm reviewing on the DVD because Amazon.co.uk does not list the blu-ray...but there is a blu-ray out there!

I love this film. It's silly and fun with some great, over-the-top performances. Oh, and an incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith. So, because I love it, I really wanted a blu-ray.

I was really surprised to find that the only country this was released to blu-ray was Germany. I searched the 'net and finally found blu-ray.com where I learned that there was an English DTS HD Master 5.1 audio track. I took the risk and ordered it from Amazon.de.

I've just watched it and can honestly say that it looks great. It's not up to the standard of modern films by any standard, but it looks a million times better than my DVD version. There are moments where the image is grainy; but it's nothing to get worked up about. The audio is great too with no forced/burnt in subtitles!!! The extras are in SD, but there's a fair amount; including Taylor Dayne's excellent video for Original Sin.

All in all; an excellent release that anyone in the UK can order fine because Germany is Region B also.

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER

"In three days, the entire world will hear my roar, and willingly fall subject to the lost empire of Shiwan Kahn. That is a lovely tie, by the way. May I ask where you acquired it?"

One of those occasional attempts to revive a popular character from the golden age of radio as a big budget movie superhero, 1994's The Shadow was probably too forgotten by the mid-90s to have ever stood a chance at the box-office, but it's a rather decent retro-effort that works a lot better than it was ever given credit for. Instead of taking the Green Hornet route and updating its mysterious hero to the modern day, it remains a 30s period piece that keeps him in his natural environment. Probably just as well, since the character's trademark hat and cape would look even more out of place in a modern setting than they do in pre-WW2 America, while his somewhat limited powers - primarily the ability to cloud men's minds and dominate the weak-willed - probably need the distance of nostalgia for a lost age to really work. And for the most part, this really does work and rather splendidly at that as Alec Baldwin's sadistic opium dealer tries to atone for his past sins by assuming a twin identity as playboy Lamont Cranston and the crime fighting Shadow and finds himself up against John Lone's evil-and-definitely-unreformed Shiwan Khan, the last descendant of Genghis Khan, who wants to set off a prototype atom bomb in New York as the first part of his plan to create a greater empire than his illustrious ancestor...

4.0 out of 5 stars A new take on a superhero
Although one for the hard core Comic Book fan it is entertaining and Baldwin plays it with just the right of menace and tongue in cheek wit to keep the plot boiling over nicely.
