An enjoyable read, where the author has mixed the Regency and the past together. The action takes place in a Castle in Scotland where a Laird is able to pass from the past to the Regency time, and fall in love, with the help of Runes stones, which they both possess. It passed the time and took my mind off this weather. J D Boon

Another great story...I really liked the way in which the author described photography in its formative years. The book is primarily a mystery with a good helping of romance and ghosts to the bargain. It starts off with a funeral and ends with a wedding; a great read.

I found this to be rather slow paced for the first half but it did pick up pace eventually. Cant say I really enjoyed this book, it was more a case of I started so I was determined to stick with it. Guessed right at the start who the villian was.

Disappointing, Sappy 17 Jan. 2007
By Meg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I was expecting so much more. It should have been a great book. The two main characters did have a lot of thought and feeling to them but it took over half the book to get them together. The first half she was trying for tension, but they only had a few conversations and not very long at that. When they did get together it was over done. They were instantly in love , as though they had been for quite a while. And the way they then spoke to one another. Darling this dearest that. It just didn't feel right. Mostly because there wasn't much interaction between them before they got together. I think the story itself was interesting in the fact there was a little mystery. Who the ghost was and who stole the jewels. Over all not a good book. Boring

Great book to sit down with in front of the fire this winter 22 Nov. 1999

Format: Mass Market Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Kirkwood's A SLIP IN TIME and was (not so) patiently awaiting her next novel. SHADES OF THE PAST did not disappoint my expectations. This is a well written book, where the characters are interesting to read about although only fairly well developed. That would probably be my biggest criticism of the book, I would have liked to have seen a little more depth to the characters. Our hero is tormented by his previous marriages. He is a bit moody, but I really didn't feel his torment. There does not seem to be a lot of interaction between our hero and heroine, (because our hero keeps running away), yet they are sexually and mentally attracted to one another. If you have so little contact, how can a relationship grow? It seems like they are forever avoiding one another, yet have fallen in love. I would have liked to have seen more communication. The secondary characters give a great boost to the story. Good sister/bad sister, rambunctious brother, interested nephew, eccentric nanny, and corrupt constable, all make for attention grabbing reading.
I found reading about early photography, how it was done, with each step carefully explained, both helpful and informative. With the addition of the paranormal, this book covers just about all the bases. I did feel that our ghost might have been a little too helpful, not leaving much of the mystery for our hero and heroine to solve. Do not look for a twisting turning plot, I figured the "whodoneit" fairly early on, though there are a few surprises in store.

Wonderful romance/ghost/mystery all in one! 15 Jun. 2012
By HAR (Calif) - Published on Amazon.com

This book is one of the best ghost/romance's I've read in a long time! (And I read A LOT) I see it was first published in 1999 and I'm surprised I missed it. I've gotten to where I skim through so many stories because the sex scenes have taken over most of today's books. I didn't have to skim with this story. I was enthralled from the beginning! You pretty much know who the villain is from the first but that's okay. Just reading how it all came together was great and the cast of characters were delightful. I'm excited to see that this author has a new book coming out this year. Looking forward to that very much!

A GREAT GOTHIC VICTORIAN MYSTERY ! 20 Mar. 2012
By AC - Published on Amazon.com

It is not so often that I come across, in my opinion, such a great Victorian Gothic mystery ! I have found here, absolutely everything I could hope for and beyond ... Hidden family secrets, scandal, passion, jealousy, deception and murder, a very nasty constable and a Ghost !

From the very beginning this story grabs you and throws you into a whirlwind of very powerful emotions. Royal Sherringham, ancient seat of the Viscounts Marrable has its very own identity and importance. It is heavily charged with history, each architectural details has its significance and memories. Kathleen Kirkwood described in beautiful detail the majestic house in such a way that it magically came to life before my eyes. Ms. Kirwood provides just the right amount of detail, which add an incredible dimension to the story, creating a bizarre, spellbinding and unique atmosphere that pulls you in.

The author has delivered a captivating and intricate story where romance and mystery are perfectly balanced. She skillfully added an unusual element of photography, I have to say I enjoyed that aspect very much. Her interesting explanation blended brilliantly to the storyline.

Vanessa Wynters and Lord Adrian Marrable are attracted to each other from the start but they have to fight it for very different reasons, which adds a lot of exciting sexual tension. I enjoyed the Marrable family and all of its diversity from the Vicount's twin, the sisters, the young nephew and to the old nanny, oh and let's not forget all the departed. They all give the book even more depth and interest.

It was extremely entertaining and exciting to read with not a moment of rest. I highly recommend it. I became a big fan and I eagerly awaits the release of A Slip in Time, but I know I'll have to be patient. With great enthusiasm I give this novel 5 STARS.
