James goes to war. That's right, here in the sixth book, he gets to kick a little Empire butt. Early in the book he heads over to Madoc and with those he's gathered to him, sets out to cause sufficient damage to the Empire's forces to enable Madoc's army to push them completely out.
This isn't a head on, army versus army type of battles. No. It's more of a guerilla campaign. James and his bunch push deep behind the lines and play merry hell with the Empire's supply line and engage the reinforcements heading up to the front.
The Empire's mages play a major role in this book. Previously, all we've seen of them was when James came up against them in battle. But here, we see into the School of the Arcane and learn more about what makes them tick.
Battle after battle, they push their way deeper into Madoc until finally entering the Empire itself. By this time, forces are being diverted from the front and other places to squash them.
Be prepared for some sleepless nights for when the action starts, it can last for chapters. James also has come up with a few new tricks which are quite ingenious. His 'seeds' were a stroke of genius and worked out quite well.
Of course, there's a climactic battle at the end of the book with magic flying and swords striking. Completely incredible. One of the better battles I've read to tell you the truth. The ending of the battle wasn't what I expected and I won't say any more. don't want to spoil it for you.
For me, this was the best of the series.
