Book Description

4 Oct 2011
Nothing is black-and-white when dealing with love or murder. In “Shades of Gray,” an award-winning photojournalist finds herself on the wrong side of the lens when she is framed for murder. Samantha "Sam" Jennings has been hiding from the world since she was seventeen years old. At twenty-seven, living in isolation on a small private island off the coast of South Carolina, Sam guards her privacy. Her photographs are famous, but her face is anonymous. And she likes it that way. Caleb McCloud is a defense attorney who basks in the spotlight. His legal successes have him on a career path to become the youngest president in the United States. But an entanglement from his past may put a kink in that path. When front-page headlines scream: "Photographer Shoots to Kill," Sam finds herself facing murder charges in the death of Ben Fuller. To stay out of jail and catch the true killer, she must turn to Caleb, the one man who has haunted her dreams since she was a teenage. She vows to trust him with her life but not her heart. But as the two begin a journey to find a killer, Caleb vows to win both. Is he too late? Find out in the action packed love story of Samantha and Caleb.

Most enjoyable. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. It did have a happy ending. I would like to read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling read 16 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Loved this book, but title a little confusing after the Mr GRay books. I would recommend for anyone that's likes romance and a little bit of detective work

5.0 out of 5 stars First book? REALLY? 18 Feb 2012

I've never lived in the low country, but novelist Kim Sanders made me feel as though I had. Her description of the scenery made me want to visit that part of the country. Sam is the reason I liked this book because she made me see the things she saw and feel her emotional turmoil. There's a lot more to this book than romance. This book keeps you guessing til the very end. The strong characters and the plot are just two of the reasons you want to keep reading. I'm hoping to hear more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars for a great new author 13 Mar 2012

Ms. Sanders hits just the right balance of mystery and romance, serious situations and humor. She has a deft touch with descriptions of both people and scenery, her dialogue is believable, and she managed to write a murder mystery without any gore. I look forward to meeting some of the secondary characters again in her future books, especially the hero's sister Abby. Like some of the other reviewers, I found it hard to believe this was a debut novel. Bravo!Shades of Gray

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought from the cover.... 1 Aug 2012

This romantic suspense did keep my interest, so the writing was such the plot moved the story forward, and I wanted to know what happened at the end. The writer did a good job in describing the surroundings and setting of the book so I could picture everything. I didn't buy the book because of its cover. I am not sure what prompted me to get it, probably the story line. I definitely look at book covers and I think this one would be a lot better; this one does not, in my opinion, fit the story. I have to say the title of the book made me think it was going to be similar to another book with a similar title and I was surprised it was nothing like it, which is good.

I have a kindle fire so it is very easy to highlight words or whole sentences where I found problems with the story. I got totally confused between who John and Jim were. It appears to me they are one in the same guy, because I couldn't figure out who came to check on Sam's place and met Maggie in the process and the guy Maggie fell in love with. And there was the guy Abby, Caleb's sister, kissed; was it John or Jim or was there really two different men with those names and I missed it (and if I did, I apologize)? Or did the author forget which name she used for this love interest of Maggie's, and which one Abby kissed, I had to ask myself? In an author's first book, they tend to use the same letter for the first name in the book and it makes it quite confusing. I know, I've done it too.

For a first book, I did enjoy the story line, and it was an enjoyable light read. I do have to say though the reason for the low star rating is because the book really needs another editor/proofreader/copy editor/beta reader, or what have you because of the grammar errors, though I have to say the editor in me didn't kick in until Chapter 8. All in all, I would recommend this book to readers of romantic suspense as it was a story keeping my interest until the very end. I would probably read another book by this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overrated 7 April 2012

This is a C+ book which for some reason has received an A- cumulative rating. Generally I find Amazon ratings reliable, however this book was a disappointment. As a free Kindle download with Amazon Prime I expected a light, romantic beach read, but this is mediocre even for that genre. While Ms. Sanders does a nice job describing Charleston and the barrier islands, the characters are either overly emotional or bland. There is potential in her writing but the undeserved high rating would make me unlikely to read another of her novels.

I enjoyed this book very much. A romance, but with enough suspense to keep me guessing and interested until the end.
