I couldn't get to grips with this book. It tries to be a typical police murder investigation but then supernatural powers come into play. Less than normal people abound in a small community and through all this is the shining light of DS Tom Ward. In terms of the story, Templeton is at her best when writing about the police activities and the characters within the force. Less credible are the strands of background and the followers, however young, of Egyptian gods.
I couldn't empathise with any of the characters really, most seemingly superficial with the main exception of Ward. But, for me, this was not enough to enjoy the book very much. I struggled to the end and it's happy ending for some but, having finished the book, couldn't really remember why I bought the copy in the first place. I'll give another of the author's books a go and see where that takes us; good country-style crime detection is always a plus - ah, now I remember why I bought the book.
