Obviously flawed but not a complete disaster.,

This review is from: Shades [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of the DVDs selling for a quid all over the place. You can see why. Its an intersting little oddity though. Mickey Rourke is clearly a man with either strange taste in projects or a desperation for cash these days, as this came out at about the same time as he bowled me over in Spun. This is a Belgian effort, where Rourke plays the director of a similarly low-budget film about a serial killer. Contact with the killer is made and trouble ensues.
Most of Rourke's co-'stars' are pretty lame, but Rourke himself shines through as effortlessly cool, shambling around in the less-than-bog-standard sets & 'moody' lighting. The 'film within a film' idea is a good one in theory, but hardly new, and let down by the script. A few vaguely interesting montages of media coverage spice it up slightly, but the main draw for me beyond Rourke's involvement was the fact that it was Belgian. I don't think I've ever seen any other Belgian movies! They don't hold back on including a good percentage of Flemish dialogue and whilst the potential for some beautiful location filming was clearly way beyond the realms of the budget, its just nice to see a little addition to 'world' cinema. Worth a quid, but I wouldn't seek it out!

This review is from: Shades [DVD] (DVD)
Erik Van Looy's Shades exposes the dark `nasty' side of filmmaking. The tumultuous stuff audiences do not get to see - the troubles of funding low-budget productions, the complexities that come with mixing fact and fiction and how temperamental stars can ruin a production. In this respect, Shades is thematically similar to Abel Ferrara's The Blackout (1997). It has numerous layers to its narrative, for the most part being a self-referential film within a film that blurs the distinction between truth and fiction. When it comes to Mickey Rourke, there is honesty in his performance as the director. He says to his actor Dylan Cole, `There's a reason that you and I are here in Belgium making a movie, it's not like we're on top of the world, it's not like were a couple of kings anymore'. This is a great sentiment about his own fledging career as an actor in Hollywood (this was before he found his feet again). It has a brilliantly written script, the cinematography is beautiful and the music comes straight out of a seedy strip club. The message at its heart is commerce often compromises art. This movie within a movie is a postmodern deconstruction of cinema.

Mickey Rourke fans will know about this already, a film he made in europe before his comeback in the Wrestler. He is a snake charmer as opposed to a nice guy in the movie industry. As usual this is weird as only Mickey knows how but very entertaining and interesting. A good DVD for your cult collection, hard to find.

As I ordered The movie Shades by Mickey Rourke, I can honestly express how good this film is.
I truly enjoy the work of art and this film has many aspects of them all. Mickey Rourke was made for this film, the cool guy with the shades that takes this journey of a film of a film with many inside jokes. 2 thumbs up. I am very happy with ordering at amazon.com! They ship fast and the items are always in perfect condition. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

I really liked this movie. It is a must for any Mickey Rourke fan. The inside jokes are enough to make it good but Mickey takes it that extra step further and makes it great. A movie about a movie that takes great pleasure in poking fun at Actors, Actresses, Producers, Directors, cast and crew. The movie industry portrayed as the cutthroat, unscrupulous, painful industry it is. No one is left untouched. Even the writers get a jab when the "full of himself" star wants to change the script as he sees fit. A full-length feature full of Mickey Rourke makes this a must see.
