"Ballads Blues & Bey" (another brilliant CD)has been a long time favourite, being just Andy Bey playing piano and singing mostly standards with his unusual but captivating voice. I bought this one hoping for more of the same, and found this time out he's with a band, and performing an eclectic mix of songs in a variety of styles. The tracks range from out and out scat to an ethereal interpretation of Nick Drake's River Man, a beautiful Afro-Cuban lullaby, and some familiar standards. As the liner notes say, he's mixing a palette of colours, going from light to shade. And the liner notes are not wrong. This CD is ideal for a listener who wants to invest the time to hear a performer who puts all of himself into his music. It needed a few plays before I realised just how good this is. Incredibly diverse, but worth listening to many times to get the best from it.
