This book is absolutely the best alternate present book I've ever read. Magic is Real, and always has been, and is now a subject at Cambridge university! Rauol is a t-shirt clad teacher with new-fangled ideas of using computers to make spells quicker and easier to cast. He's a *very* lovable main character... eccentric, individualistic- e.g. he lives in a huge manor dubbed Thornhold, and hangs out at a less than reputable pub filled with less than reputable people.

Even though this book's plot is very much that of a fast-paced, exciting mystery novel, all the wonderful little details really make the people, places, and magic come alive. It gives a great idea of what things might have been like, had Merlin had an apprentice all those years ago...

I want more stories with this magic works in Modern England setting. Story reminds me of P. Anderson's Operation Chaos and Operation Luna. I liked the eccentric hero with his total lack of social graces and the good heart hiding under his wild child exterior. Whitchurch

Ms. Woodbury takes a 'normal' murder and puts it into a seductive setting. The reader is kept turning the pages through sheer fascination. Excellent readin

an innovative fantasy combined with a solid mystery 1 Aug 1996
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
An assistant professor of modern magic, Raoul Smythe, is
suspected of the
murder of the chairman of his department. He promptly
investigates. The best part of this book is the system of
magic the author has created which is reminiscent of Randall
Garrett's work. The university setting with its rivalries is
very accurate. The principal flaws in the book are the
unlikeability of Raoul Smythe (at least initially) and some
choppiness in the storyline as various suspects are brought
to center stage and then discarded. Still, I am planning to
buy this author's next book.
