This review is from: Sgt Bilko [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Writers Nat Hiken (who wrote the original television series) and Andy Breckman tried to recreate to long running and original success of the television series starring Phil Silvers which ran on CBS from 1955 to 1959 for 142 episodes, a real product of its time against the backdrop of the Cold War. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, it is an enjoyable film with lots of laughs but it does not quite come off; the world has moved on a bit since then and Bilko is an ulikely character, as is his superior Col Hall.

Not intending to ape the original too much meant they had to move away from the characters and the end result of that is they are not the characters and the characters were the source of the humour.

An entertaining evening but not a classic. Steve Martin is a great comedian but, as soon as actors put on other's costumes, they become a straight-jacket preventing their real skills from coming out. The same happened with Inspector Closeau and his attempts to recreate Peter Seller's character. An impossible task, one which only the brave or foolhardy would attempt; even Peter Sellers did not quite pull it off in later Closeau films.

Steve Martin obviously has his heroes but he is a good enough comedian to create a few of his own.

This film has the feel of the TV show and the personality of today's (1996) actors. And who better to select a Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko than Steve Martin. I just don't know why then military did not want to participate in the making of this movie!

Fort Baxter on the surface looks like it is being run by Colonel John T. Hall. Yet in reality the Fort is actually being controlled by Sgt. Bilko. Sgt. Bill code is a schemer and always has some sort of racket going. His crew takes part in his nefarious goings-on. However Major Colin Thorn (Phil Hartman) is on to build those little schemes and determined to expose them. The big showdown comes with a demonstration of the Hover Tank. Can major Thorn exposed Bill co-and also show that Colonel John T. Hall is just his puppet?

Meanwhile in his scheming Sgt. Bilko almost marries (several times) Rita Robbins (Glenn Headley) his sometimes co-conspirator. Will she ever be able to corner him?

The movie is fun to watch over and over as you feel like you want to kibitz each time.

2.0 out of 5 stars All that glisters is not Silver, 25 Aug 2011
This review is from: Sgt Bilko [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
An ill advised big film remake of the classic Phil Silvers Show. It's not totally bad but nobody could ever hold a candle to the original ensemble of what is one of the funniest, best cast comedies ever. Perhaps we should just see this as a fans' tribute to a great old show.
