Product Description

Review

Sezen Aksu, the queen of Turkish contemporary music, has sold more than 20m albums in her 30-year career. She provoked some of the wildest scenes I have ever seen at a foreign-language concert when she made her first appearance here nine years ago, and there will doubtless be a similar reaction when she returns in October. She became a celebrity in the 70s as the first woman in Turkey to record and perform her own material, and she has continued to break taboos, tackling personal and political issues and daring to sing in Kurdish when it was officially banned. Now in her mid-50s, she is still an exceptional singer, as she proves on this, her first international release. She's backed by a guitar band, brass, strings and Turkish instruments for a set that consists largely of love songs, from the pained Vay to the emotional and explicit Sayim. Then there's a powerful lament about fate, and a driving political anthem in which she asks "Which side are you on?" to the backing of rock guitars and jazz-edged horns. Sadly, there are no full translations of her lyrics, but her passionate vocals are enough to justify her celebrity. --guardian.co.uk

This is Sezen Aksu's most mature album; her voice shines and she's banished the digital echo effects which once bedevilled her music. Now we can feel the gorgeous textures of a voice that fully justifies the 'Diva' tag. --Top of the World, Songlines, October 11

A really good album that grows on you and takes root. I especially love the finely-balanced song Sayim which is a poem about kisses. It builds up with intensity of passion. The slower songs are as ever with Sezen Aksu the ones which go deepest, such as the wistful 'Vay', though the upbeat Ayar has a great chorus, the Arabesque sounding 'Aska Sukrederim' strays into Cheb Khaled territory and 'Ah Felek Yordun Beni' has strong ethnic sounds and is a rousing last track - except if you keep the CD playing and you'll find a hidden acoustic bonus track. A pleasant surprise! There are helpful mini-translations of the Turkish lyrics in English, French and German, which get to the core meaning of the songs. It's Sezen Aksu's 24th album apparently. But still a good place to start. Or I guess a must-have if you are a collector!

Amazon.com:  1 review
another one for Sezen fans 13 Dec 2011
By Cemile Guldal - Published on Amazon.com
I would not expect this album to become a huge hit in Turkey. I would expect those, who don't really listen, to gloss over this one, again. Surely, Sezen fans will tune in and pay attention, because as usual, the poet has spoken in words that will haunt. From the self-criticism to the social commentary, the longing for yet another lost love to flirtatious and playful sentiments, the album is a complete masterpiece. In the future, fans will feel their hearts jump when they hear certain songs from this album, while those who didn't pay attention will wonder where these songs came from. Sezen knows exactly what sells and what doesn't in Turkey, and she tends to strike a good balance between having to sell and creating the art she loves (sometimes they coincide, sometimes they don't.)
