Reviews

The curmudgeonly northern comedian Les Dawson in a collection of episodes from his 1970s TV sketch show. The world-weary stage persona of Les Dawson was starkly contrasted on the show by dancing girls, glitzy sets, and the Syd Lawrence orchestra. Fellow comedian Roy Barraclough joins Les in their long-running, pantomime dame-style housewives sketch, Cissy and Ada, while John Cleese also makes an appearance.

A lot of people bemoan the fact that these kind of shows, with their special guests, singers etc are released in their complete form rather than a compiled 'best of'.

Being someone who saw these shows originally, it's great to see them (as was the case with the Tommy Cooper DVDs) as they were originally show. Les is on top form here, delivering great gags, good sketches and of course his inimitable piano playing.

Excellent!

Les Dawson was a unique comedian. there will never ever be another Les Dawson no matter what comedians come and go. I do have agree with the other reviewer there is far too much loud band music and little of Les Dawson. as the series goes on it does become slightly better but, the dvd should be called "The Syd Lawrence show" as it seems we hear more of his band playing Glenn Miller music then seeing Les Dawson. I brought series one & two I have not seen series two yet I only hope that all the problems are ironed out and we see more of Les Dawson instead of hearing loud band music most of the time.

Each episode of Sez Les lasts for 25 minutes but what with tunes from Syd Lawrence & his orchestra and various special guests you actually only get around 10-12 minutes of Les Dawson per episode.

Hes much funnier standing in front of the crowd doing one of his monologues than he is in the various sketches but there is a very funny sketch with Les & Kenneth Connor discussing the meaning of comedy.

This was before the days of Cissie & Ada but Roy Barraclough does put in an appearence as a camp shop owner.

So not really what Id hoped for but there are some good laughs here.
