This compelling and intelligent book isn't just about the life of "an ugly man," as pseudonymous Stan Cattermole describes himself. More, it's a personal reflection on feelings familiar to anyone who has ever felt they were born in the wrong family -- or were unloveable -- or lacked something that everyone else seems to be finding -- or had moments of being torn between self-confidence and self-loathing. In other words, most of us can find ourselves somewhere on these pages.

As with the best memoirists, Cattermole has excellent pacing, a keen sense of humor, and a gift for believable dialogue. A number of bloggers are getting book contracts these days; not all of them make the transition from screen to print. Others seem caught in their particular moment in time; their stories will seem dated in a few years. Not Cattermole, a clearly skilled writer with the ability to root his personal history in the essence of human nature. This story is more than true -- it is heart-true.

I highly recommend this book.

P.S. it's also pretty sexy ;-)

On the surface and in the bookjacket blurb, Stan's book appears to promise a blokey and perhaps slightly erotic male version of Bridget Jones.

As you read on, you'll realise that Bete de Jour is in a completely different class - and in a class of his own. Beautifully crafted and practically impossible to put down, you'll find yourself with Stan on a journey that will have you laughing out loud while wiping away tears of sadness - and then laughing out loud again. And although the book is certainly sexy, the profound climax of the book has nothing to do with sex. But it will move you.

I'm not surprised Stan's been described as a major new writing talent. His offering here is proof indeed that you can't judge a book simply by its cover.

I read Bete de Jour, the blog from day one and Stan Cattermole never ceased to make me laugh, cry, gasp and even get rather cross, on occasion. Every human emotion was there.
Then came the book. What could possibly hold my attention?
I read it in less than 24 hours and hung off every word. It's real. It's raw. It's a life story that will grab you by the hair and leave you screaming for more by the end.
Read it! You won't regret it!
