5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry 12 Feb 2010
By Lawrence W. Meegan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I heard about this on NPR while driving home from work Tuesday. Three hours later I owned it. A day later, I finished reading it. Great book and a fun read.

The book is a compilation of personal ads that appeared in the London Review of Books. David Rose, edited the LRB personals and this book.

The ads are mostly brief, like poetry, haiku. So few words, so much meaning nestled in there.

The NPR interview hinted that the writers were pathetic people. I don't think it's necessarily so. Some are brutally honest about themselves, their life, and their prospects. And they can see the humor in it.

I think you'll enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Date Night In 22 April 2010
By Jane - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this book to give as a Valentine's Day gift for my husband along with a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies. We sat on the sofa nibbling cookies, reading the ads to each other, laughing heartily and embellishing the evocative stories with fanciful details. Very, very fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intellectuals need love too 19 April 2010
By A. J. McKee - Published on Amazon.com

This is the sort of personal ads collection that you could write a book, or at least a short story, about each ad. Where were these guys and gals when I was growing up? They all sound like a scream to know, and probably excellent conversations to be had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexually, I'm More of a Switzerland: More Personal Ads from the London Review of Books 9 Mar 2010
By Helen M. Parramore - Published on Amazon.com

A great collection of Lonely Hearts ads for intellectually oriented heavy readers and breathers who have trouble putting their books down long enough to do it. Oh,If only I lived in London!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 5 May 2013
By Lloyd Porter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Hard to believe this wasn't written by a panel of professional comedians. Short, little bursts of hilarity that contain pathos, comments on the human condition and absurdity.
