Product Description

Review

'… the work is seminal and extraordinary. Janet Afary has raised a high bar on the many, many issues surrounding the politics of gender and sexuality in Iran.' Thomas Ricks, Professor of Modern Iranian History

'Janet Afary takes us beyond gender politics into a world few outsiders understand. Once again she proves herself to be an astute and original observer who sees beneath the veneer of modern Iranian life.' Stephen Kinzer, New York Times

'The narratives and anecdotes provide a vivid real-life texture to the history Janet Afary is uncovering. In short, the text is alive and engaging!' Miriam Cooke, Duke University

'Sexual Politics in Modern Iran is one of the most comprehensive works done on this topic up to this moment. It combines modern scholarship and a deep understanding of the gender issues in Iran.' Farhad Khosrokhavar, Le Monde

'Janet Afary's remarkable book gives an unparalleled account and analysis of changing gender relations in modern Iran's history and society … a unique and thoughtful work that sheds new light on Iran today.' Nikki Keddie, University of California, Los Angeles

'On nearly every page of [Janet Afary's] engaging, amply illustrated new book, she disinters morsels of history and analysis that will surprise even those with a more than casual knowledge of Iran. Her account goes right up to the contemporary women's movement and today's ongoing sexual revolution, including the latest in Iranian gay liberation discourse. Sexual Politics in Modern Iran is an invaluable landmark, a signpost on the road to an end of gender discrimination and sexual liberation for all.' In These Times

'The East–West battle over gender is brilliantly described by Janet Afary in her groundbreaking survey Sexual Politics in Modern Iran.' New York Review of Books

'Afary does a spectacular job explaining, as well as detailing, sexual attitudes and practices from the 19th to the 21st century. Her account gives an excellent feel for how Iranian society works and how that has changed under the impact of modern times. Plus, her detailed research makes the account much more credible than some of the highly readable stories from Iranian-Americans about personal life in modern Iran.' Foreign Policy

'Afary weaves a very interesting and complex argument together that unveils the politics of sexuality in Iran. It is bound to generate a good debate among historians and social scientists. Sexual Politics in Modern Iran is a welcome addition to the history of women and sexuality in modern Iran.' Middle East Journal

Published 2009-11, this is the most thorough and interesting read on gender in Iran. It covers 19th century to modern day. It includes references to Foucault; feminist magazine, 'Zanan'; changing perceptions of widowhood during the revolution and lots of points not covered by other texts. Contains lots of illustrations and photos - a book definitely worth buying - esp. if you have any academic interest in gender - Iran - Islam. ...Most of all, it is not in the least bit boring! It conveys Iran and Iranians as 'thinking' and connected to the world and in constant change - which some texts fail to convey in their portrayal of Islamic countries or Muslims generally.

The book is based on a well researched materials available in the west. It is easy to read and follow. There are a few mistakes due to the authors' unfamiliarity with persian language i.e. Plane tree is translated as Cycamore. But these few items are not affecting the flow of ideas and the presentation of the arguments. The punch point of the book ,in the last chapter, is not as strong as the historical details in the rest of the book. This shows how little academic in the west know about what is really happening inside Iran.
I strongly recommend this book to whoever wants to know about the history and development of Iranian women: Their roles in the society; their struggle and their achievements in time.

Iranian Society You Never Knew 4 Jun 2009
By T. Rahimi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Thoroughly researched and meticulously presented, Janet Afary's book uses the prism of gender segregation to take the reader through one and a half centuries in the lives of Iranian men and women. From the mid-19th century to the present, you walk through the streets and alleys, listening to under-aged girls being given away to pre-arranged husbands, to women who will see their husband's new legal wife coming home, to harems of the elite and wealthy bursting with wives, concubines and boys. Yet, you also see how under such horrific repression, Iranian women resisted, survived and even prospered.

The story of women who have been oppressed for centuries and their male oppressors is one of immense importance and a possible cause for Iran's problems. Half of the population's creative energies was held back and kept in lock and chain, while the other half's creativity was mostly spent on devising schemes and institutions to keep them so.

In this sex-obsessed society, you're either enjoying sex or providing it, as all else seems to work within this concept. While imperial powers were increasing their influences in Iran, with the British in the South and the Russians in the North, the Qajar kings, princes and the rest of the elite were busy with their sexual politics.

Reading this book - shocking mostly but always enlightening - could be the first step in addressing the dysfunctional norms of Iranian society. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in understanding current issues in Iran - as well as possible solutions.

Just amazing! 12 Oct 2011
By V. Voss - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In this book, Afavy gives an amazing and thorough examination of the politics and changes of the concepts of gender and sexuality in late-Qajar, Pahlavi and Islamic Iran. One of the most wonderful attributes of this work is its use of media images, legal documents and news and magazine articles. By doing this, a reader gets a better look at the everyday life and implications of the political and social upheavals(as best as one can I guess). Read this book if you want to know about more about Iran!
