5.0 out of 5 stars About the Book, 14 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Enables those suffering from this disorder to recognize that sex need not be a furtive enemy to be fought & defeated but, instead, a deeply sensual, passionate, fulfilling & spiritual experience that all human beings are innately entitled to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Important but Little Discussed Subject, 15 Sep 2007
By rfn_williams (London, England) - See all my reviews
In a society where sex and relationships are taken for granted, and where sex is used to sell products galore, it is to the author's credit that he has brought to the light of day the fact that a significant number of people, due to issues within themselves, find it very difficult to initiate sexual relationships with anyone. These are not just 'older' or unattractive people, but include the young and very attractive. Such people are ill served in a society which has a huge focus on sex, and are ill served by a theraputic 'industry' that is biased towards people who are sexually active. It is true that this is mainly a 'psychological' problem, but many pyschological problems cause as much distress as physical ones.
I applaud Carnes for writing this book, and for bringing this difficult subject out into the open. However, I fault him on textual style in that it lacks a flow and seems disjointed and repetitive in parts. But, on the other hand, he has written an excellent account of society's (actual) negative attitude to sex and the distress that this can cause. In addition, there are 'golden nuggets' of revealing information in the chapters: Relationships, and Knowledge.
I am very glad this book has ben published, at a time when it would be very difficult to find this subject discussed elswhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally the other shoe has dropped!, 5 April 1998
By A Customer
Dr. Carnes has often implied that the co-addict plays an inportant role in identifying and treating sexual addiction. Now we see the the co-addict (and/or) sexual anorexics are very near the core of the adiction. The families dealing with the problem or the woman wondering why she is not is a relationship can see 'a reason for' and a 'way out of' tremendous emotional discomfort. Dr. Carnes, the next two books that we want to see are the; the impact on the entire family as a system and the effects of such an environment on children along with correction techniques. This book is an excellent balance to the entire sexual addiction dynamic.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's over-inflated
If you can read the blurb on the back (that sexual addiction and sexual anorexia are part of the same problem) then you need not read the whole book. Read more
