Review

Six seasons and a decade on from its debut, Sex And The City makes the transition from small to large screen and comes, as you might have guessed, suitably bedecked in a sassily assembled soundtrack. If the film fails to live up to its hyped title of 'movie event of the year' - well there's a surprise! - the soundtrack at least manages to sound like a passable weekend accompaniment to throwing on the Manolo Blahniks and hitting the town.

The show's familiar theme gets an injection of much-needed attitude and adrenaline from hip hip-hop princess Fergie courtesy of Nas, Amy Winehouse and Fugees producer Salaam Remi, but, predictably enough, there are also songs to avoid.

The Madison Park Vs Lenny B remix of Nina Simone's The Look of Love fails to justify itself, and The Bird & The Bee provide a dreary, helium-voiced take on Bee Gees' classic How Deep Is Your Love. To be fair, that only seems bad until you trip across the excruciating version of Auld Lang Syne by Scottish duo Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis, which grates from first note to last.

Actress Jennifer Hudson turns in an OK new song for the end credits sequence, Duffy's career-making Mercy puts in an appearance and Run DMC's Walk This Way struts it stuff with agreeable bombast. Elsewhere Joss Stone warbles away with Al Green on How Can You Mend A Broken heart and India.Arie, in agreeably lovelorn fashion gets to The Heart of The Matter, vying for the accolade of 'stand out track' with Kaskade's I Like The Way, shot through with a jazzy deep house vibe.

So there you have it: Sex And The City and the soundtrack. It's either been on your wish list for months, in which case enjoy, or you'll wonder why they bothered. --Michael Quinn

Wouldn't necessarily have bought all these tracks individually, but on a soundtrack to a great movie they really work together. Particularly love Fergie's Labels Or Love, which samples the SATC theme tune. A must have for SATC fans.
