5.0 out of 5 stars A real collectors item 19 May 2011
By Mr. G. Bridgeman-clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
When this book was first published it was a revelation on several fronts. It was compiled by the greatest pop icon of the time Madonna, it has a metal casing and was sold sealed and it was madonna's attempt to shock and it did. I only managed to get my copy recently and though it is now over 16 years old it is a masterpiece and collectors item. Ok the shockability has gone. Talking about anal sex is no longer taboo and the images of a naked lady is commonplace, though this is of course Madonna in her prime. I wonder if she regrets publishing this now?

All in all I like the images and I like the format. I collect photographic and art books and this is now a well respected addition to my collection..

Format:Hardcover
This book contains many stunningly shot & thought provoking photos of this century's most famous icon and her personal ideas, thoughts & fantasies about sex.
The enormous range of images will have you returning again & again to this fascinating book.
Not for the prudish, sexually repressed or old fashioned romantic!

What a great book. Madonna brings erotica to life with a book exploring her own sexuality and the hidden world of fetisihism. Madonna as submissive, as dominatrix, as prostitute, as lesbian, as porn star. Full beaver shots. Nothing left to the imagination !! Photographs by Steven Meisel and members of his studio; edited by Glenn O'Brien; art direction by Fabien Baron. Illustrated by over 100 color & b/w photos. Celebrities photographed with Madonna include Naomi Campbell, Isabella Rossellini, Big Daddy Kane, Vanilla Ice and more. A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply SEX 3 July 2004
Format:Hardcover
Madonna's first foray into the world of publisihing was her spiral bound, coffee table book 'SEX'. When it was first released globally (although it was banned in some countries) in 1992 the critics savaged Madonna on what they thought was just an egocentric pop star wanting some attention and to shock people. It would take Madonna a number of years before she could shake off the negative feelings towards her as a result of this book. As a result, many of her other projects at the time of it's release were completely overshadowed, most notably one of her strongest albums 'Erotica' which suffered poor sales. But with over a decade since the release of 'SEX' and the passing of the controversey, many people saw it as an act of rebellion, liberation and of feminism too with Madonna never being portrayed the victim in the photographs (even when she was), because people know that Madonna was in control of the situation. The book itself consists of various photographs shot by Steven Miesel in Los Angeles and Miami and features appearnces by Issabella Rossilini and Naomi Campbell. The essays in this book deal with sex (of course) but more to do with empowerment and a break from the sexual taboos that dog society. The essays are all written under the guise of Madonna being Dita Parlow, who also makes an appearance on the album 'Erotica'.
Over all this book garnered so much outrage and controversy probably because of the fact that it was Madonna who was responsible for it but this is a fantatsic piece of Madonna's art and definently a collectors item for any fan!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Strange Affair 29 July 2002
Format:Hardcover
This book is a very strange pop cultural artifact. It aims to be provocative and in-your-face, and yet the glossy, highly stylised sheen of fashion-photographer Steven Meisel's images only serves to soften the edges and sanitize the whole effort. In the end it comes off seeming rather contrived and try-hard. That said, there are some striking images here, and even some beautiful ones (Madonna hanging suspended, naked, above the ocean, for example.) For Madonna fans it's a must-have collectable. For everyone else, it's noteworthy for it's subject's sheer audaciousness in doing such a book at that point in her career, but the actual content is rather a disappointment. Still, it's collectability and value should only increase as Madonna's star seems unlikely to wane - ever. (Imagine how much a book of Elvis naked, simulating sex, would be worth today!)
