Sugar-coated murder! 12 Feb 2007
By Sarah Durston TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Sophie writes murder stories and having had an adaptation for a screenplay agreed, she is slightly miffed when her producer is found murdered. Then Sophie makes a connection...the producer died in the same way as one of the characters in one of his films, and a New York rapper, JJ Money, has been murdered in the same way he describes in his rap song.

Then prank calls start and Sophie feels that someone has been in her apartment. This is what happened to one of the characters in one of her novels....is she next on the murderer's list???

As you'd imagine, this book is light fluffy reading but it's really readable, and is along the same lines as Janet Evanovich. Sophie is helped by her gay hairdresser ('The only thing I want to do everyday is Ricky Martin'!), a ditzy make-up artist and the owner of a sex shop.

Throw in the mysterious Anatoly, the artist Donato and the wannabe Vampire Jason, and you've got a really enjoyable read.

A Riveting Read! 24 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Death imitates art in Davis's playful debut about crime novelist and wisecracking interracial Bay Area hipster Sophie Katz, who possesses either an overactive imagination or a keen awareness of criminal behavior patterns. When rapper JJ Money and the movie producer interested in optioning Sophie's novel both die in scenes lifted from their respective works, Sophie is the only one who sees the connection. Soon, it seems someone is reenacting the ominous details (vandalized car, crank calls, mysteriously broken wine glass) of her bestseller, and she fears that she's the next target. Sophie turns a suspicious eye on sexy bad-boy Russian-Israeli Anatoly Darinsky: he's either a homicidal stalker or prime boyfriend material. When the San Francisco police scoff at Sophie's suspicions, the plucky writer turned amateur sleuth enlists her less-than-intrepid circle of friends; drawn in broad strokes, they include gay hairstylist Marcus, clueless wallflower Mary Ann and savvy sex-toy aficionado Dena. Davis keeps the tone light throughout, as Sophie maintains her irreverent sense of humor even as the peril mounts.

I am not sure what took me so long to pick up this gem of a book! I have had it on my wish list practically since it came out and I had heard wonderful things about it but just never got around to sitting down and reading it. Well, who knew that I was missing out on such a unique, clever and witty series?

Sophie Katz is not your typical chick lit character. For one she is half Jewish and half black (it is great to finally see some ethnicity in chick-lit), secondly she does not work in the fashion or magazine industry, she is a bestselling mystery author, who in `SEX, MURDER & A DOUBLE LATTE' finds herself wrapped up in a mystery of her very own. After the deaths of a couple of A list celebrities Sophie begins to get a few mysterious phone calls and an odd note that reads "you reap what you sow". This is not quite enough to freak Sophie out, however, when the strange incidents start piling up she notices that they are coming from one of her very own novels. Sophie knows that it is not just her mind playing tricks on her but the police will have none of it, in fact she quickly becomes a suspect in her very own stalking as well as some other neighborhood crimes. Now it is up to Sophie and her delightful crew of friends to solve this mystery before the final chapter!

Kyra Davis brings a fresh voice to chick-lit and I cannot wait to hear more from her!
