De Vries has a lot of promise...he introduces new ideas to management thinking (albeit in this case ones that are fairly old for anyone with a decent knowledge of psychology) but he does have a habit of over simplifying and reducing these ideas to a basic and simplistic level. Not that there is anything wrong with simplifying...but at times I felt this text was aimed at A level students! It is a good read for MBA students and Managers with NO real understanding of psychology....but a bit of a waste of time if you have even a limited amount of expereience in this field. A disappointment which started well!

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need is love? 17 July 2009
In this book, Manfred Kets de Vries, one of the leading management thinker and practicioner on leadership, attempted to do something very different from his many other books. This time, the author brings key learning points on «living». How can we deal with four of our life's major challenges: first, the sexual desire, which can often makes us do things we would never otherwise have done; second, the need for money, which can sometimes affect the lives of people that have too much in a much more dramatically way than the life of those who have too little; third, the quest for happinness, with the recurrent question on «how to be happy?»; and, last but not least, our relationship with death, not only our own but also, and probably much more impacting, the loss of a close person. The afterword section of the book deals with the search of meaning in life and other related themes like wisdom, altruism and authenticity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Isn't This a Bestseller Yet? 8 Mar. 2010
By Brian Redmond - Published on
I have recently discovered Manfred Kets de Vries through a friend of mine as part of a study of the schools/streams of leadership. My initial exposure was to Leadership Mystique where he explores the human side and the neuroses of organizations and their leaders. Excellent writing and some of the best content I have come across.

In this new book, Ket De Vries reflects and provides insightful wisdom around big existential questions and dynamics of life.

This is the first review I have written but this book has driven me to take this step and strongly recommend it.

You won't regret the read although you might find the message challenges who we are.

I loved this book with it's take on the most important things in life while ripping apart taboos and leaving our own personality in place. It does not force you to think, or you would not have bought the book; but it does make you think about the past and what's left of your life (and what you are going to do about it).

3.0 out of 5 stars You may read this if you want to hear the authors mind flow 10 Aug. 2012

I didn't find any deep thoughts here in this book. It looks more like listening to not very professional coach. No emotions, new thoughts or questions.
