Product Description

Fantasized about quitting the 9-5? Walking away from credit card debt and student loans? Think living in the South Pacific for two years sounds like a perfect solution and perhaps even a winning idea for your first novel? Maarten Troost does just that, setting up as a devil-may-care islander while his girlfriend, Sylvia, gets to work on saving the planet, or at least a little part of it on an end-of-the-world atoll, Tarawa. Life on Tarawa resembles not so much paradise as a theatre of the absurd where planes fly with the aid of masking tape, Coconut Stalinism prevails as national government and Sylvia is co-opted by the CIA to spy on the Chinese. But, abandoning continental hang-ups like barbequeing the local dogs and watching on as international industrial fishing trawlers plunder the world's richest tuna supply aren't so easy. Perhaps only by following the locals and letting go, one just might find a better way to live...

Fantasised about quitting the 9-5?
But abandoning continental hang-ups like barbequeing the local dogs and watching on as international industrial fishing trawlers plunder the world's richest tuna supply aren't so easy. Troost's hilarious and pointed sarcasm at the Western world's laughable hypocrisies, apocalyptic behaviour and insistence on trousers in equatorial heat, reveals that by following the locals and letting go one just might find a better way to live.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable and informative, 16 Sep 2007

I was recommended this book on a reading list and since I like to read outside of the box on occasions, I took a chance. The author decamps with his girlfriend to a tropical island in the back of beyond. While she works for an agency, he writes articles and embarks on a novel. It's a fascinating glimpse into life on an atoll - an overpopulated one, and about the polluting of paradise. Be prepared for a lot of scatology. Excrement is everywhere!
I found this book entertaining and informative. It had some serious messages and alarm calls among its pages and it should rouse the reader's indignation at what is going on. Laugh aloud funny? No - or perhaps my sense of humour is not honed in that direction. Mildly amusing - in places. Readable - very. I still prefer My Family and Other Animals though as a different story of island life!
It's a thought provoking book and although it won't be going on my keeper shelf, I will be passing it on to others who I know will enjoy reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful glimpse of life on a very laidback island, 9 Mar 2007
By Joanne Schofield (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When the author and his girlfriend decide to go and live on Tarawa, a small Pacific island, for a couple of years, little do they know what they're letting themselves in for. As soon as the intense tropical heat hits them they begin to realise just how far away they are from the western world, and things they've taken for granted, like music, magazines and long showers, often seems like a dim and distant memory.

This is a hilarious account of exactly how life is on a sleepy island. The author's tales actually made me laugh out loud at times, from his hair raising experiences on the South Seas, to his feelings regarding the persistant sound of La Macarena being on permanent replay across the island. This really is a book to take you away from it all, read it and enjoy.
