Book Description

‘You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.’ Albert Einstein

If you are interested in being published, you should do all you can to make the publishing business interested in you. But how? You've already written a good book, so what else do you have to do to give yourself the edge with agents and publishers?

Sex, Lies & Book Publishing is a field guide to the nature of publishing - the unspoken rules and conventions deciding which books get published and which don't. It is an up-to-date insider's guide to an often mysterious business, and an invaluable resource for any author seeking an agent and, ultimately, a publishing deal.

Sex, Lies & Book Publishing lifts the lid on the publishing world today, and the people who work in it - from the often riotous private lives of book editors to the ways they judge new fiction and non-fiction and prepare it for publication. Our guide is packed with trade secrets you won't read anywhere else, including some which publishers might just prefer went unprinted.

Inside information can help you present the kind of work which will find a market. And that’s where this ebook gives you the edge.

Rupert Heath has spent twenty years in book publishing, and has been the managing director of his own agency for over a decade.

1.0 out of 5 stars yet another waste of money and time 2 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
It tells you no more or no less than you, as an aspiring writer, already knew about the mainstream publishing trade which is - unless you're Katie Price or Victoria Beckham - exactly what you don't want to know. They are the most pathetic and badly-run industry on the planet. The book itself has lots of tired little jokes in its introductory chapters, which, of course, no publisher would ever countenance, even if they bothered to read more than the first line, which, of course, none of them do. The author also has the audacity to hold out a - sort of - offer, that if you read this you will get through to his agency with your first novel. I read it, wrote the letter and I can tell you - you don't.

Overall, this is just another classic example of the perpetual, peculiar - nay, unbelievable - mystique with which the publishing industry shrouds itself. Do we think they may collapse? I wish.

Don't waste your money. Instead, spend it wisely by writing and publishing yourself.

I downloaded this because I'm pimping my fiction MS about the agents, and I thought, well, why not? Maybe it'll help.

And it did. The sections on what agents do are really important. Oh, yes, we know they peddle the book to publishers, but I didn't really appreciate exactly what they do, the time and effort they put into their authors - so now I understand why agents are cautious as to who they take on. They really have to believe in your work; now I don't begrudge the people who rejected me in the past (although, to be fair, my early productions were not fantastic and, in fact, somewhat embarrasing. No one is going to sign you on a whim).

The explanations of how publishers work was valuable, and as someone who has recently been commissioned to write non-fiction (no, I'm not quite sure how that happened either), the large section on publicity and marketing was great. It's really down to the author these days to make people aware of their work, and in fact, reading this ebook gave me lots of ideas on how to make sure people know my tome exists (prepare for me to bore on at length... sorry).

It's pithy and wryly amusing, clear and honest; it's nice to know that agent can write so engagingly. But why wouldn't they, when they spend their lives walled in by words?

Before you sit down to write your covering letter, you must read this first.

There are a lot of these kind of books around. This one is as good as all the rest with the addition of filling in some background on the publishing world

OK. This book made me laugh outloud! It wasn't the typical: How to get your book published read. He talks more about the inner workings and the process of the publishing industry. I enjoyed it.
