Despite being billed as John Fowles meets Patricia Highsmith, there are strong overtones of Henry James's The Aspern Papers in this thoroughly entertaining tale of the clash between the greed of the film world and high literary sensibility. Set on the seductive Amalfi coast, it concerns a failing TV documentary maker who goes out to try and persuade a grand old man of literature to give him a rare interview. Instead, he becomes his secretary, caught up in a web of lies, farce and passionate intrigue. Though far too idealistic about the nature of novelists ("the highest voacation"), this is an impressive and accomplished debut which will bring pleasure to many.
