Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sex, Chips and Rock 'n' Roll spins a complex web of secret loves and twisted ambitions against the backdrop of the early British music scene. It's a rock n' roll soap opera, but it's smartly written and engagingly acted, full of subtle commentary on the cultural changes cutting across British society.

Manchester in 1965 seems like a dead end to two sisters, flirty Arden (Emma Cooke) and bookish Ellie Brookes (Gillian Kearney). They ache to get out from under the thumb of their domineering grandmother (Sue Johnston), and when their cousin Norman (David Threlfall) proposes to Ellie, she accepts. But just then the sisters meet a struggling band called the Ice Cubes, who grudgingly play back-up for a smarmy singer named Larry B Cool (Phil Daniels) while trying to land a record deal. Arden throws herself at the group's leader, Dallas (Joseph McFadden), but Dallas finds himself drawn more to Ellie, who's also an aspiring songwriter. From there the multi-dimensional characters take unexpected turns, and you'll quickly find yourself drawn into their lives. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Synopsis

Two sisters stifled by their family and of the opinion that they are destined to miss any fun that the 60s has to offer discover the delights of rock 'n' roll in the Exelsior Ballroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best...................., 11 Jun 2004

'It's 1965 and times are changing fast' - this is the video of the 'pulsating BBC sixties series'.
'Ellie and Arden Brookes seem destined to play out their lives behind a Manchester chip shop counter.
Mercilessly put down by their strict grandmother, the swinging sixties have yet to impact upon their fun-starved, sexually suppressed lives.
From the depths of the Excelsior Ballroom, Dallas McCave (Joseph McFadden) and the Ice Cubes are about to release their own brand of rock n' roll on an unsuspecting world, and their fatal charm on the sisters.'

Outstanding play by all, but particularly from Gillian Kearney, Sue Johnston and the very handsome 'Dallas'.
Some very catchy, 'can't get it out of the head' music, also.

This c300 minute long, double-video set was ordered on 25th May, received on 27th May, and watched over the Bank Holiday weekend!
Brilliant service from 'Amazon', naturally - that is how quick the 'Free Delivery' service really is - who needs the High Street?

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant, 2 Jan 2002

Had to buy the DVD as well. One of my absolute favourites. James Callis was brilliant as was the rest of the cast. I think all who watched it are waiting in vain for a sequel. If you like good acting and a well written story you will love this.

A brilliant series with great actors and an excellent storyline! I too became addicted to the show last year (and to the charms of Jo Mcfadden!) Like the other reviewers, I'M DESPERATE FOR A SERIES 2!

Come on BBC, put us out of out misery and give us something to look forward to on a Sunday night!
