Review

." . . this book is clearly and playfully written, in order to entice and allure the reader, but basically it has a very clear, contemporary-oriented thesis." -

Biblical Archaeology Review

Product Description

What is the Bible's stance on such controversial issues as homosexuality and polygamy, and what does it have to say about sexual behaviours that some would deem sick or criminal? Is sex always wrong if it is not used to create life? Ellens' book answers these and other questions related to the Bible's take on sex. Arguing that our understanding of what the Bible has to say about sex is frequently misguided, Ellens corrects our impressions with a look at the scriptures themselves. He considers what they might have meant to people in the past and reflects on how we understand, or misunderstand, them today. Focusing on early interpretations and contemporary misconceptions, Ellens guides readers through what the Bible actually says, showing how these messages have been interpreted in different contexts and suggesting new ways of reading and translating them for use in our own lives. Readers hoping to reach a better understanding of the Bible's stance toward sexual practices and sexuality in general will find their questions answered here.

Excellent insights 26 May 2011
By Barbara M. Wiggins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Sex in the Bible offers perspectives from a psychologist, an army chaplain, a pastor, and a Biblical scholar- all the same person. It is rare to have such a combination, all at a high level.

The book is well-written and easy to follow. There are a number of topics that are treated in an intriguing way: the sexuality of God; a re-examination of the story of Onan from multiple perspectives; the relationship between sexuality and spirituality; the evolution of religious teaching because of Thomas Aquinas and Saint Jerome; the interconnections between the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and Islam's Qur'an; and even the current pedophilia crisis. A book that causes you to re-think concepts you thought you understood is very helpful to intellectual and spiritual development.

The insights Dr. Ellens shares reveal not only his deep love of God, but also humanity.

Not a scholarly study 31 July 2009
By David G. Harvey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
While Ellens does a good job of breaking down strict stereotypes surrounding sexuality, I've found that he unfortunately tends to make a lot of claims or assumptions that are either not backed up by Scripture or appear to be his own personal moral view. Either way, it is misleading for the reader. He claims that while sex within marriage is obviously ok, so is "sexual communion between unmarried consenting adults within a meaningful friendship, and premarital sexuality between persons exploring the possibility of or engaged in a potential marriage contract." (p.35) While there may be no direct biblical injunction against such sexual contact, Ellens never reveals to his readers by what evidence he has reached such conclusions.

Ellens elegantly deconstructs many traditional interpretations of Biblical passages about sex and sets the record straight. Well-researched. Thought-provoking.
