Sex and the City managed, over its six-season run, to become something of an icon. It's one of those programs that’s passed into pop culture; the show that launched a thousand personality tests, each asking whom you identify with most: prim and proper Charlotte, career girl Miranda, man-hungry Samantha, or introspective (but always impeccably dressed) columnist Carrie Bradshaw.
The cast isn’t as truly an ensemble as, say, Friends; Carrie is the main focus, with Sarah Jessica Parker's notoriously outrageous wardrobe tending to draw as much attention as the plot of the episode. Funny without being farcical, Sex and the City was also touching and aspirational. Unashamedly girly, the series created a kind of modern fantasy: four friends, each with her own distinct personality, finding her way around the battlefield of life and love in New York City. Though Sex and the City sparked controversy over whether it represented a new age of feminism, or, conversely, was deeply traditional or even damaging, it was always undeniably entertaining nonetheless.
This shoebox style boxset contains all the episodes (and costs considerably less than a pair of Manolo Blahniks) and so is ideal for catching up, ready for the hotly rumoured movie version. -- Sarah Dobbs

It seems from other reviews that my feelings on this boxset are not unique and so I can be brief.
The show itself is outstanding with six seasons of dynamite; witty, intelligent, moving and captivating all at once, it truly is one the finest shows to come out from across the pond in a generation, right up there with Scrubs, Friends, South Park, Family Guy and pre 2000 Simpsons. It also ends on the high and never outstays its welcome.
However the boxset itself is a little bit of a let down. Whilst the packaging is nice, once the DVDs are in he player, things slip. Firstly, there is no 'play all' feature which does get a little annoying but even move so is the lack of chapters. If, half way through and episode, the phone rings, the kitchen explodes, the baby cries or the door goes and you are forced to stop, you have to fast forward through the episode the old-fashioned way to get back to your scene - what is this VHS?
This should not deter you from buy the set though provide that (like me):
1: Picture quality is not important and you couldn't care about the Blue Ray fad.
2: It's the quality of the watch and not the mechanics of the DVD that bother you.
3: Extras are something you maybe watch once if you have nothing better to do.
Personally, the above are not so important to me, but if they matter to you...

No-one else seems to have mentioned the quality of this particular DVD release, as opposed to say, the shoebox edition, or the Amazon Exclusive with the book.
The series DVDs themselves are a shoddy affair, with a grainy picture plaguing the first five years and none of the episodes featuring chapter points, commentaries or the like. There are also no play-all functions to be had and the menus take an age to load. The show is great but the DVDs are not.
The extras included here feature 11 minutes of deleted scenes (for SIX YEARS worth of television), 3 minute-long alternate endings for the series (all rubbish). The meat of the bonus disc comes in the form of two half-hour HBO Farewell shows, essentially clip compilations with a lot of interviews from the cast, as well as famous fans Heidi Klum, and more. Also included is a 48-minute panel session with the writers and Sarah Jessica Parker, and if you can understand a word she says as she spouts vague nonsense about, well everything really, you;ll enjoy it. The writers have more to say.

Many of the DVDs don't play all the way through and freeze. Then returns itself back to the main menu. Recommend buying the seasons separately. This has happened twice to me now. Won't be getting a replacement for the third time!!

Brilliant Purchase
