Sex and the City managed, over its six-season run, to become something of an icon. It's one of those programs that’s passed into pop culture; the show that launched a thousand personality tests, each asking whom you identify with most: prim and proper Charlotte, career girl Miranda, man-hungry Samantha, or introspective (but always impeccably dressed) columnist Carrie Bradshaw.

The cast isn’t as truly an ensemble as, say, Friends; Carrie is the main focus, with Sarah Jessica Parker's notoriously outrageous wardrobe tending to draw as much attention as the plot of the episode. Funny without being farcical, Sex and the City was also touching and aspirational. Unashamedly girly, the series created a kind of modern fantasy: four friends, each with her own distinct personality, finding her way around the battlefield of life and love in New York City. Though Sex and the City sparked controversy over whether it represented a new age of feminism, or, conversely, was deeply traditional or even damaging, it was always undeniably entertaining nonetheless.

This shoebox style boxset contains all the episodes (and costs considerably less than a pair of Manolo Blahniks) and so is ideal for catching up, ready for the hotly rumoured movie version. -- Sarah Dobbs

4.0 out of 5 stars Five star show but not the best box-set release 23 Aug 2010
It seems from other reviews that my feelings on this boxset are not unique and so I can be brief.

The show itself is outstanding with six seasons of dynamite; witty, intelligent, moving and captivating all at once, it truly is one the finest shows to come out from across the pond in a generation, right up there with Scrubs, Friends, South Park, Family Guy and pre 2000 Simpsons. It also ends on the high and never outstays its welcome.

However the boxset itself is a little bit of a let down. Whilst the packaging is nice, once the DVDs are in he player, things slip. Firstly, there is no 'play all' feature which does get a little annoying but even move so is the lack of chapters. If, half way through and episode, the phone rings, the kitchen explodes, the baby cries or the door goes and you are forced to stop, you have to fast forward through the episode the old-fashioned way to get back to your scene - what is this VHS?

This should not deter you from buy the set though provide that (like me):

1: Picture quality is not important and you couldn't care about the Blue Ray fad.
2: It's the quality of the watch and not the mechanics of the DVD that bother you.
3: Extras are something you maybe watch once if you have nothing better to do.

Personally, the above are not so important to me, but if they matter to you...

The show is brilliant enough to watch over and over again, despite a less than perfect box set for a good price. But if you were expecting some kind of duluxe edition then don't judge this one by its cover and look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A girl's best friend 2 July 2010
I'm 20 years old, and i've only just recently discovered the whole Sex & the City franchise. After enjoying the first film i decided to get into the series themselves, and i am so glad i did! As an aspiring writer, keen on fashion & shoes, and adore gossiping with my girl friends, i cannot believe i havent discovered Sex & the City sooner! It has swiftly become one of my favourite tv shows and i decided to treat myself to the boxset, instead of trying to watch the repeats on the tv. It is a gorgeous looking boxset, and i think this boxset should be in every woman's dvd collection! Go on girls, treat yourselves to this boxset. You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 5 Oct 2008

Though the box is extremely irritating - it takes forever to get a DVD out due to the bizarre packaging - the contents are certainly worth the wait.
Being under the impression that I'd actually seen all of the episodes, I have been joyously surprised to discover a few that I've never seen! Yey!
I think this box set is a must for SATC fans and has certainly been making me laugh out loud (again) as I sit through each marvellous episode with a large glass of wine.
Has there ever been a greater love story than Carrie and Big? And what about the taming of Miranda? The varied attempts at the Holy Grail (Marriage) for Charlotte? And the woman with the best one-liners ever - Samantha...C U Next Tuesday... I am LOVING it....

3.0 out of 5 stars Great series 5 Mar 2011
I thoroughly enjoyed SATC after watching them all night after night when ComedyCentral replayed them, so I figured I'd buy the boxset and enjoy them again at my own leisure. If you're buying this, you probably have already seen the series; if not, it's worth every penny. The actual show is definitely worth five stars. Other reviews seem to cover the excellence of the series, so I will focus on the design.

The box is a bit of a pain, and if I was buying this now, I would probably choose to buy the other design as it looks more sturdy and reliable. If the tassel on the front of this box breaks, that would be extremely awkward, and inside, a small piece of fabric allows you to lift the actual DVD holder out of the box itself. It all seems a bit fragile. I'm giving this three stars on the basis of the flimsy box design.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fab series, not so fab boxset 12 Aug 2010
Well if you're reading this you're clearly a fan of the series, so why bother wasting your time telling you about the series?

The box is pretty granted, but so fiddly which is annoying to get a disc out, and once you open it, the individual series tend to fall out!!!

That's liveable but what is truly annoying about this boxset is the lack of 'play all' on the dvd! You have to play each episode, you may think 'no big deal' but it gets on your tits...

Sex and the City is more than a TV show, it's an institution. It was the first show on television to examine how women really think and feel. Yes there is the word 'sex' in its title and sex features a lot in the show, but it is more to do with relationships and female friendship than just 'shagging' the first guy that comes along!

Series One:

The clothes seem a bit dated now but of course that's to be expected and it is now annoying to watch episodes where SJP looks at the camera and the continuous cutting to various extras with their own opinions. Highlights of the first series were 'The Baby Shower' and 'O Come All Ye Faithful'. We are introduced to Mr. Big and develop a love/hate relationship with the man who is never quite there for Carrie.

Series Two:

Is personally my favourite series as the girls are really looking and acting at their best. Carrie is recovering from her break up from Big but manages to rekindle their relationship if only for a brief period. The episode, 'La Doleur Exquise' is probably the most heartwrenching of all the episodes in Sex and the City and the viewer really feels torn as Carrie is literally forced to untangle herself from Big's grasp. Miranda meets Steve and embarks on a brief affair, whereas Charlotte continues her search for Mr. Right and Samantha comes to terms with size being an issue. The final episode of the series, 'Ex and the City' has a fantastic reworking of 'The Way We Were'. I think the highlight of this series was Carrie's impossible relationship with Big.

Series Three:

Once again begins with Carrie recovering from the Big situation and meeting Aidan.
