Interesting book, not quite as I expected. Designs were very young in style but can be adapted. A book for my library but may pass it on.

Great beginners' book 16 Aug. 2011
By priz_m - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
It's been only a few months since I started sewing and in this little time I've "hoarded" a silly amount of sewing books that are meant for more experienced sewers. I got my copy of "sewing in a straight line" because the projects seemed perfect for my current sewing skills. I have to say I love it! The projects are super cute and it's nice to see modern home sewing projects for once. I love the fact that it features a quilting project which I've also been curious to learn about. I would strongly recommend it to beginner sewers. This would make a terrific gift paired with a sewing machine.

Best project book! 25 Aug. 2011
By Alyssa A. Moncur - Published on Amazon.com

I just got a sewing machine last month. I am very excited about it and have ordered a lot...A LOT of books for project inspiration. This one is one of the best. I have already made the "one hour skirt" twice! Im nervous to start with patterns and this book is great because you cut your own! She gives you the dimensions to cut and you piece them together, no tissue paper! There is variety too with lots of home dec projects and baby projects. This book makes sewing seem a little easier!

measurements do not work with the dress project 26 Feb. 2012
By gym_hound - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
At first, I loved this book. I made the one-hour skirt twice and loved it. Taking your body measurements and then cutting two rectangles from which to create the skirt doesn't work 100% because the skirt ends up extremely poofy (even for a poofy skirt, which I like). I had to take inches off the suggested measurement and it's still poofier than a poofy skirt. My major problem, however, is the "shirred to the max" dress. This does not work. The first time I made it following the measurements exactly, I ended up with a shirred dress that was so, so huge--MUCH bigger than my body. It was like I was holding a barrel around my body and it could have fit someone about 8 or 9 sizes bigger than me--NOT exaggerating. I took to my sewing machine and sewed a rectangle off each side, discarding the beautiful french seams I worked so hard to get. The second time I attempted the dress, I subtracted many inches off the rectangle measurement and it was still too big. The problem with making a dress out of a rectangle is that, even with the elastic, the upper part of the dress does not get small enough to stay up, and when you reduce the rectangle's size, the bottom becomes too tight and bunches up in weird spots. I give up! I guess I'll use this book to make too poofy one-hour skirts because they look ok. I can't be the only one having this measurement problem with the dress. I'm going to look at a different book.

Incredibly Inspiring 25 Aug. 2011
By whitebreadtoast - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I haven't had the chance to make anything from this book because I'm working on The Quilt That Will Never End. However, I was thrilled to crack the cover and see really current projects that would be great finished as directed - or taken whatever direction you wanted to go.

I like that the projects are simple, but look cool and cover a smattering of project types from clothes and accessories to home to gifts. And everything relies on your own measurements - so not only could you easily adjust things to be however big or small you wanted, the clothes can be made for anyone, which is refreshing. This weekend, I'm going to put aside the aforementioned quilt to make the purse - with a few modifications to suit my style. That's one of the things I like the most - I feel like this book is a great jumping off point for many ideas and every project leaves a lot of room for you to customize however you like.

Another plus - the directions seem very clearly written and I think the diagrams are helpful. I've read the directions for each project and have been able to clearly see in my mind how the item is constructed. I haven't found any directions that left me scratching my head in confusion.

I think this is a perfect book for a beginner because you can have fun, immediate success. That's what you need when you get started sewing (at least I did). This book is also probably really great for anybody who needs a shot of inspiration like I did. I'm really glad I picked up this book!

Inspired back to sewing 31 Aug. 2011

I've been tiptoeing back to sewing all summer long and wow - this book is exactly what I needed to get me running with my sewing. Love, love Brett's style of writing - you have the feeling that she is right there with you at the sewing machine and that yes indeed, you can make this all by yourself and it will look great. Highly recommend this book for beginners and for people like me who are returning to sewing after many years away from it.
