Product Description

This is the larger woman's essential guide to garment construction. Designed to meet the needs of the basic sewer, Sewing for Plus Sizes guides the reader through such important steps as selecting designs, colors and fabrics that will enhance plus-size figures.

From the Author

Why I Wrote Sewing For Plus Sizes
I wrote Sewing for Plus Sizes: Design, Construction and Fit for Ample Apparel because I wanted to share with other large women the sewing skills that I had to learn the hard way. We all need clothes for work, play and special occasions, but if you're plus sized, you know how hard it can be to find ready to wear clothes that you really want and need. Even though we don't get taller as we get fatter, much ready to wear clothing and patterns for plus sizes are drafted to fit only statuesque, hour-glass shaped plus-sized figures, and not the bounty of body shapes common among large women. Also, the ready to wear industry makes assumptions about the taste and income levels of plus-size women that probably don't match your life style at all. This book teaches readers who sew to surmount this dilemma, by making the kind of attractive, comfortable, durable, and fashionable clothes that will enable them to live full and happy lives. In my 30-some years of sewing, I've worn every size from a 12 to a 32. Along the way, both as a home sewer and as a custom clothier, I developed fast and fearless techniques for selecting styles, adjusting and enlarging patterns, and making design modifications that enhance fit and comfort for large women. Sewing for Plus Sizes teaches these sewing techniques with an abundance of easy to follow instructions, clear photos, and illustrations. I hope readers will enjoy the snippets of humor scattered throughout the book, and its can-do and supportive point of view. I'm especially excited about the numerous, beautifully photographed, fashion- forward sample garments, modeled on sizes 18, 24, and 32. They will inspire you to look and feel fabulous! Read this book through once like a novel, then go back and try the techniques to sew clothing that fits your body and your life!

At last a book for larger ladies that doesn't pull its punches. It has simple diagrams for altering standard patterns to accommodate extra inches, plus an awesome guide for making a body-fit tailor's dummy that makes fitting a breeze. Thanks to Barbara Deckert for putting her ideas into print!

I wish I'd had this book twenty years ago! Over time I've worked out how to avoid some of the pitfalls explained in the text (e.g. having shoulder lines half way down your arm) but my sewing has been iulluminated by other details given about pattern adjustment.
The information about types of fabric to use and confirmation that big people are hotter were also welcome, as were the explanation about ease and back measurements (I could go on ..)
Some of the colour-blocking was not to my taste but I still enjoyed the principal and admire the courage of anyone wearing a "car-wash" skirt!
I found the instructions were clear and easy to follow.

This book has become my bible! It sits on the shelf next to my sewing machine, along with all those patterns I never thought it was worth buying because I am a size 28. The only negative point about this book is that, at times, it goes into detail about stuff that's too complex for me as a home sewer. However, that may well change in the future and, along with Ms Deckert, I am now able to achieve smart and stylish clothing every time with my sewing machine!
