Brilliant! 29 Oct 2011
By F. Pullen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I have to admit I have been very excited every since I heard this book was being written, not just because Shelly & Karen are talented the owners of independent pattern company Patterns By Figgys but because as the mum of a 3 year old boy I know how poorly they are catered for compared to girls.

I am pleased to report the book is a good as I hoped it would be. It is packed with 24 projects including trousers, t-shirts, jumpers, jackets and even pyjamas as well as a few accessories like a car mat, pencil roll and a brick bag amongst others. The instructions are detailed and are supported by black & white diagrams and lovely photographs.

The best thing is there are 8 full size pattern sheets in the back! When you think that the book is currently selling for less than the price of just one of their patterns it is certainly amazing value for money too. If you have a son/grandson, or know a sewist friend who does this book would be a great buy.

I always wanted a little girl because there is just so much more choice of clothes in the shops for when I want to indulge in a bit of dress up. However, I had a gorgeous little boy and then, for Christmas, a sewing machine so I thought I'd try my hand at making some clothes. I ordered this book as most of the other books on sewing for children seemed to have very little in the way of boys clothes. I must say, I was a little disappointed with it.

Good points: patterns are included, good, clear instructions and information about different sizes. Also, some of the non-clothes items like a Lego carry bag and a play mat i might have a go at making.

Bad points: In the 24 designs, there was not very much to my taste. Elasticated trousers... a romper suit.. (I decided that there are already a lot of lovely rompers for boys out there that cost just a few pounds - making one would be too much money and effort really!) and a little suit of jacket and trousers, but the jacket doesn't have lapels and looks... homemade! Very charming for some, I am sure, but I wanted to find designs that wouldn't look like i'd just knocked them up on my machine at home and didn't have time/know-how to put lapels or other little details on.

Also, in the 24 projects, there are a couple of things that don't really merit being counted, such as a belt (a length of fabric with d shaped metal belt hooks) a patchwork blanket (squares of felt stitched together) and a drawstring bag. For PE perhaps?

I have down-rated this book mainly though because the clothes are not to my taste; if boxy, very homemade and ill fitting clothes appeal to you, then you may like it.

My favourite sewing book 12 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started sewing a year ago, inspired by the idea of making clothes for my two boys. I quickly realised that you have much more limited options when making boys clothes compared to girls so I was very excited when I saw that this book was going to be released and pre-ordered it immediately. I am so impressed with this book and have been slowly working my way through the patterns - writing each one up on my blog (Craftstorming). It also has a lot of detail on various techniques such as types of stitch and finishing seams.

The authors are so encouraging as well and really quick to reply if you contact them with any questions. There is also a sew along going on at the moment on the Boyohboyohboycrafts blog. I certainly plan to make most of the items in this book.
