"ok, cut a couple of rectangles, here's the size we used, but use a different size if it works for you. Now cut these other rectangles, here's the size we used. Now put them on top of each other in this order, and pin them. Sew them like this, and turn them inside out, and there you go!"
I've simplified that a little...but not by much! No patterns to trace and cut out and pin on and cut around...bliss!!! Today was the first day I really got to play with this book. By the end of the afternoon I have made three tissue pack holders, an eyeglass case and three drawstring bags! It probably only took me a few hours, all told.
There's even a Flickr group for the stuff you make using this book! Very cool.
Very inspiring, I'm glad I bought it!
The book explains how to choose suitable fabrics and what kinds of threads to use. It litterally takes you from the first time you sew. Tells you exactly what you will need for sewing, in general at the beginning, and in detail for each project. There are no patterns with this book but this does mean you create your own designs to suit your own needs. The book is ring bound, so lays flat on the table next to you as you work, which is great if you want to refer back to things as you go.
If you are new to sewing this book will hold your hand, it does not patronise your lack of knowledge but shows you the way. No refering to techniques that aren't explained in the book. A good mix of projects, that increase in complexity later in the book. Brilliant buy! Would also suit younger sewers, as the projects are well explained and simple to follow.
Check out the authors blog, as there is an example of one of the projects from the book on there too.
Great book, buy it now :)
I had hoped for something more inspiring. This is definitely one for beginners.
Some of the projects are variations on a theme but, using Lexie's approach of building a bag by thinking how you want to use it, you can expand on her ideas and make almost anything.
I found her style very inspirational and will definitely have a go at 50% of the projects in this book.
