I like to sew and I have done a couple of simple quilts but I've had trouble with books about making bags in the past, because they all seem so complicated! This book is different. It basically starts out with a lot of general tips and tricks for sewing, and explains (very well!) what lots of terms mean, and then goes on to explain the projects in ways like:

"ok, cut a couple of rectangles, here's the size we used, but use a different size if it works for you. Now cut these other rectangles, here's the size we used. Now put them on top of each other in this order, and pin them. Sew them like this, and turn them inside out, and there you go!"

I've simplified that a little...but not by much! No patterns to trace and cut out and pin on and cut around...bliss!!! Today was the first day I really got to play with this book. By the end of the afternoon I have made three tissue pack holders, an eyeglass case and three drawstring bags! It probably only took me a few hours, all told.

There's even a Flickr group for the stuff you make using this book! Very cool.

For anyone who enjoys making bags for their own use or to gift, this is a slight variation from the norm. It allows you more freedom to personalise and stylise your project to your own taste. Lots of lovely photos, so even if you don't get around to making any of the projects, this book is lovely eye-candy!
Very inspiring, I'm glad I bought it!

I wanted to make a simple draw string bag, like the old fashioned PE bags. This book showed me how to create one and has lots of other great, timeless designs. The book is perfect for someone new to sewing and does not expect prior knowledge. I just bought a sewing machine and this was the first book I bought, to try out ideas. Some of the bags would also make great wrapping for special gifts.

The book explains how to choose suitable fabrics and what kinds of threads to use. It litterally takes you from the first time you sew. Tells you exactly what you will need for sewing, in general at the beginning, and in detail for each project. There are no patterns with this book but this does mean you create your own designs to suit your own needs. The book is ring bound, so lays flat on the table next to you as you work, which is great if you want to refer back to things as you go.

If you are new to sewing this book will hold your hand, it does not patronise your lack of knowledge but shows you the way. No refering to techniques that aren't explained in the book. A good mix of projects, that increase in complexity later in the book. Brilliant buy! Would also suit younger sewers, as the projects are well explained and simple to follow.

Check out the authors blog, as there is an example of one of the projects from the book on there too.

Great book, buy it now :)

This book is very good for two reasons. 1) The projects are inspiring, and make you want to get going. 2) Once you get down to doing the actual work, the instructions are easy to follow and produce good results. I'm almost a complete beginner at sewing -- I used to sew with my mother when I was quite small, but that was a good while ago now -- so I needed a book that made things very simple. Also I love the way this book takes it for granted that you'll want to customise bag sizes, pockets, etc, and gives plain instructions for doing so by telling you how much seam allowance you need to add on each side, and how to deal with pockets for wide items, and so on. I'm very glad I bought this book, and all my relatives are getting hand-made Christmas presents now...

This book seems to stretch one pattern across most of the book. Yes, the method and instructions are useful and easy to follow if you lack basic knowledge but the rest is just a parade of different fabrics and many of the projects you would just never use in real life!

I had hoped for something more inspiring. This is definitely one for beginners.

I couldn't wait for this book to arrive in the post....unfortunately I was a little bit disappointed. The patterns and bags are all really quite basic, and I think I was expecting a little bit more. The instructions and guidelines are easy to follow, great for beginners. I just wanted a little bit more!

The best thing about this book is the clarity - a real beginner could read this without being phased by lots of jargon and be making basic projects within a short space of time.
Some of the projects are variations on a theme but, using Lexie's approach of building a bag by thinking how you want to use it, you can expand on her ideas and make almost anything.
I found her style very inspirational and will definitely have a go at 50% of the projects in this book.

I love this book! It has many projects that range from beginner to pro level, and the instructions are really clear. I just learnt how to use my sewing machine, and the beginner projects are perfect for practice. My only complaint would be that two of the bags I made (the DJ bag in two sizes) turned out very soft and sagging in the middle, even though the material was as specified in the instructions. I am now looking into upholstery fabrics and fusible interfaces to make the bags sturdier. I am looking forward to staring on the 'pro' and 'daredevil' projects!
