Priceless Resource for Reference Again and Again! 23 Oct 2011
By Sheri Newton - Published on
Format: Paperback
Sew Up a Home Makeover by Lexie Barnes includes 50 simple sewing projects to transform your space. Patterns aren't needed for these projects, just some time and the basic materials.

Sew Up a Home Makeover gives inspiration to create beautifully customized pieces for your home. The arrangement of ideas shown could easily be seen on an episode of The Nate Berkus Show (which I watch as often as I can). I wouldn't be surprised if this book was featured on the show in the very near future either.

The 50 custom sewing projects included cover a huge variety of ideas for everywhere in your home. There are also variations of some of the projects to show you what else you could do with it that is very similar. This book will show you how to make a headboard, sew your own placemats and napkins, pillows, bags, slipcovers, and much more.

This isn't really a teaching to sew kind of book. It covers some basics on sewing, but doesn't cover it in much depth. The average person buying this book should already know the basics, and be readily able to sew the projects included in the book. I like this because it doesn't waste time explaining things that most of us reading the book should know anyways.

If you know how to sew and want to take your home from drab to fab, this is an extremely valuable tool to help you have the fabulous house of your dream - with minimal expenses. I highly recommend it to all of the DIYers.

A Must Must MUST have book!! 12 Jan 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
In her book Lexie talks about six basic principles to help you achieve your decorating goals. She also talks about different types of fabric and tools that you can use. There is even a section on tips and techniques. There are projects in this book for pretty much every room in the house. Some are sewing and some are not. All you need is a little fabric, a little time, and this awesome book to create the beautiful things for your home. All of the ideas in the book would be great weekend projects. The first project I am going to do is the lamp shade recover. My daughter just got all new bedding, curtains and rug for her bedroom for Christmas, and her current lamp shade does not match her new lovelies. We had talked about redoing it some how but couldn't decided what to do. After looking in this book, we can't wait to get to the fabric store and get lots of pretty things to fix it up with. I also want to make some of the big Ravioli Floor Pillows (fits a 26" square pillow). I know the kids would each love some of these for their rooms. Like I said before, I am not the best seamstress in the word. I have made a few things for the kids but that has been the extent of it. This book has inspired me to get out my poor dusty sewing machine and use it. It have a feeling I am going to enjoy using it too. All of the ideas in this book a simple and easy to make. There are step by step instructions that tell you what to do. There are even graphics that show you, for example, how to place the straps to sew onto a bag or how to sew a zipper in place. There is even a pattern to make some oh so cute slippers. I LOVE IT!!

I received this book for review from Lexie Barns/Storey Publishers. The views expressed are my own. I was not compensated for this review

Very inspiring 2 Dec 2011

I just made an envelope pillow and it came out fantastically! It made an excellent gift that looked lots more expensive than it was. Next I'm going to make curtains, and then maybe a duvet cover. I like how many ideas there are, and that the instructions are succinct, not too wordy (which can sometimes be confusing, I've observed in other project books), but also not too bare bones. A perfect little book, for me, anyway!

I can sew a square! 3 Aug 2012

I nabbed this book because I'm a pretty crummy seamstress. I'm not sure how much an advanced seamstress would gain from this, but it is a great foundation and reference book. I just bought my first house and can't believe how much basic window treatments cost. This book is fantastic for me and I am learning a lot about sewing home basics. The directions are simple, clear and really helpful. Thank you!
