Grab the bag of fabric scraps along with this book for a wealth of ideas for embellishing handmade items with applique and trims to add that truly personal touch. A full size paper pattern and 20 stylish projects are included for fashion and home decor items that combine hand and machine stitching. Grouped into three sections, the book includes cushions and quilts for the home, bags and garments for Mum plus gifts and nursery items for babies and children. After a useful introductory section on tools and equipment, the book progresses to the projects complete with step-by-step instructions, diagrams, templates and lots of additional tips. A number of different applique techniques are used and the author includes a chapter on several popular methods including raw edge, turned-edge and reverse applique. Many of the projects are stitched by machine and embellished with hand embroidery and a library of stitches is also given.-Sewing World Taking applique into clothing, Sew Liberated is all about fabric collage. The idea is for those with some sewing experience to break away from the constraints of sewing patterns and create personal designs. As you'd expect from an author who is also a sewing pattern designer, the 25 projects are modern and stylish - ranging from aprons, skirts and pillows to bags, a clock, blouse, and scarf among others. Suitable for beginners, Pattern included.-Embroidery

Product Description

"Sew Liberated" is the first how-to book of its kind to resurrect the art of applique for today's generation of sewists looking to imbue their work with creative style. Readers will learn hand and machine applique techniques for use outside the traditional quilting context, plus how to create fabric collages. Applique, a technique in which pieces of fabric are sewn onto clothing, bags, quilts, and other creations, allows do-it-yourself sewists to take embroidery to a new level; it's an ideal format for those with some sewing experience to break away from the constraints of sewing patterns and create uniquely personal designs. Explore the history of applique and how it was rediscovered in the fiber arts, learn applique and embroidery techniques, and create 25 modern, stylish sewing projects ranging from aprons, skirts, pillows, bags, totes, a duvet cover, a wall clock, blouse, baby quilt, scarf, and much more. This title includes projects that range from simple to advanced in difficulty. Step-by-step instructions, color photographs, and comprehensive how-to embroidery instructions make "Sew Liberated" an all-in-one resource and guide. "Sew Liberated" provides all levels of sewists with new techniques, creative challenges, and a full range of projects ranging in difficulty and time commitment.

feel free 5 Dec 2010
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Contemporary, chic sewing for today's sewer. I love the skirt on the front cover, the quilts, apron, cushions and placemats for the home. The wall clock is a novel idea that works. The camera and other bags are good as is the sleeping mask. The rest of the book is given over to children and teenage patterns - but you'd be missing out if you dismiss this book for that or any other reason. Some of these patterns can easily be adapted - for example the baby book could become an art journal type book. The children's totes would be lovingly carried and admired by many an adult. This book uses a variety of sewing techniques such as applique, reverse applique, embroidery and more. The ideas are fresh, modern and I think Meg has her own style. The instructions are clear, the photography is great and this book also includes pattern pieces. I would happily recommend this book. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Dissapointing 20 Nov 2011
By Gem
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after seeing it reviewed in several places/magazines/blogs. I have to admit that I really do not see what all the fuss is about. The patterns/ideas are not really very aesthetically appealing to me and I have found many, uch nicer things in magazines or on the web at a fraction of the price! There are better options so I advise you consider those first.
