This is the most fantastic book on dress patterns I've ever come across. There aren't a huge number of patterns but each one is accompanied by detailed colour photographs of the originals and step by step guidance on recreating each item, including embroidery details and even bobbin lace patterns! Before I got this book I used Janet Arnolds' Patterns of Fashion books to help create reproduction garments, but this new book gives much more detail, and is beautifully presented. Of all the books I own on the subject of historical fashion, this is by far the best. I can't praise it highly enough and hope a series of these books are created to cover different eras.

This is a beautiful book with fantastic photos. In addition to photos of the garments here are also examples of contemporary paintings, showing how the garments were worn. On the close-ups it is really possible to see the details and admire the skills of craftmen and -women centuries ago.
Unfortunately the publisher has not made it clear that the different techniques have not been treated in the same way. While you are instructed to sew, emboider, and knit as it was done at the time, the diagrams for lacemaking are not in accordance with the photos. If your purpose is to use present day lacemaking techniques to produce garments for the stage, you are OK. However, if your want to get into the mindset of the old lacemakers, you will have to ignore the diagrams and look at the photos with a magnifier to see how the lace is really made. You can then have a very interesting study, but it would help you a lot if you got hold of a copy of Rosemary Shepherd's An Early Lace Workbook.

Useful book 12 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
I am very happy with this book. I am not sure how helpful it is to someone new to historical costume but I am always grateful for further insight and knowledge regarding historical costumes. I use all of Janet Arnold's books already and this adds to them. The step by step working out of the embroidery stitches is wonderful but frustrating as I am still making a hash of plait stitch but would never have understood how to do it at all but for this book! The pattern I used was easily graded up to full size and worked well. I'd recommend this book as an adjunct to others. Start with Janet Arnold and add books like this to your collection for the sheer pleasure of them. I will be buying any other works like this to add to my body of technical know how.
