This is a beautiful book with fantastic photos. In addition to photos of the garments here are also examples of contemporary paintings, showing how the garments were worn. On the close-ups it is really possible to see the details and admire the skills of craftmen and -women centuries ago.
Unfortunately the publisher has not made it clear that the different techniques have not been treated in the same way. While you are instructed to sew, emboider, and knit as it was done at the time, the diagrams for lacemaking are not in accordance with the photos. If your purpose is to use present day lacemaking techniques to produce garments for the stage, you are OK. However, if your want to get into the mindset of the old lacemakers, you will have to ignore the diagrams and look at the photos with a magnifier to see how the lace is really made. You can then have a very interesting study, but it would help you a lot if you got hold of a copy of Rosemary Shepherd's An Early Lace Workbook.
