Product Description

Callimachus, Royal Librarian of Alexandria, is researching a new book and decides to take his young apprentice Philip on his Mediterranean journey. As Philip marvels at the most breathtaking and beautiful buildings, gardens and statues ever built - at Giza, Babylon, Olympia, Ephesus, Halicarnassus and Rhodes, he knows he will remember this trip for the rest of his life, But when they sail home to Alexandria, there is one more surprise still to come...Mary Hoffman's storytelling, based on the latest research, combines with M.P. Robertson's exciting reconstructions in an inspiring introduction to the world's Ancient Wonders.

Format:Paperback
This is a large-format book with full-page illustrations, a description of the Seven Wonders of the World from ancient history jazzed up with with a rather weak and contrived story.

I think the fictional element could have been dumped in favour of a more detailed description of each "wonder" as the story adds almost nothing.

The large illustrations are certainly bold but of uneven quality; while The Statue of Zeus and The Lighthouse at Alexandria are striking images, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are pretty feeble - more shopping mall than Kew Gardens!

Great book for younger kids 3 May 2009
By Homeschoolmom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book for my second grader when we decided to do a history fair project on the 7 wonders. She really enjoyed the fact that is book is a story and also has beautiful pictures. It did a really good job of helping a young child visualize the wonders and brought something ancient more to life for her. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to teach ancient history to younger children.
