5.0 out of 5 stars Another Contender 16 Dec 2010
By Mr. A. R. Boyes TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
In recent years Prokofiev's symphonies have received a number of recordings of the full cyle. As the last reviewer said, this one has passed many by. That it is at such a bargain price might arouse suspicions that it compares less than favourably with the newer recordings. That is certainly not so.

Yes the accoustics are excellent and Decca have brought the peak of clarity to these works in analogue sound. I Certainly prefer these to the over bright sound of Jarvi on Chandos or Gergiev's with the LSO. I can't comment on the highly praised set by Kitajenko but however good that is the Weller cycle is at a fraction of the price.

The reviews have been mixed about Weller's interpretation but certainly in the weightier middle symphonies he is hard to beat. The LSO and LPO are at their peak - I didn't know they could make such challenging works sound so easy to play, even the cacophonous Second sounds like a coherent symphony here.

The Third works as a genuine symphony rather than as a spectular set of tone poems. Weller's quick insistent tempo in the opening movement and expansive slow movements come up trumps. I'd never heard the tubular bell chimes of the finale as clearly as I do here anywhere else - this recording is a revelation. This is typical of what you find in the whole set with new details emerging that get lost in other cycles. So Weller emphasises clarity but rarely is that at the cost of tempo or urgency; with two great orchestras playing at their peak he could afford not to compromise on tempo.

The Fourth and Fifth are similarly well served even if the slow movements may drag a little. The Sixth is the masterpiece and this is as fine a version as you'll hear anywhere, as trenchant in its conclusion as ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid well recorded performances 22 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If that title seems like "faint praise", it is not meant to. I think there are probably other performances less well recorded which I sometimes prefer, but most of these are of a high standard - a bit like the old (and sometimes underrated) Leinsdorf cycle from the 1970s.

I may even give some detailed comment on each symphony when I've listened a few times, but in the meantime, here are my initial assessments of each work, recording quality in all is very good:

No 1 Three stars.
No 2 Four stars. (Beware Gergiev's LSO disc - fabulous string playing in the second movement ruined by his tuneless, thoughtless groaning!)
No 3 Five stars.
No 4 Five stars.
No 5 Three stars.
No 6 Five stars.
No 7 Four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Seven 28 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is by any standards a very good interpretation of these seven great works by Prokofiev. The Neeme Jarvi version with the Scottish National Orchestra does though have the edge...

Great performances from a great orchestra and conductor at a very reasonable price. No. 5 is particularly good. Highly recommended.
