Reviews

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Set in the South Seas, Seven Sinners stars Marlene Dietrich as a cabaret singer whose reputation as a troublemaker has gotten her kicked out of one port of call after another. Once more causing a riot, Dietrich takes refuge on the first ship out, together with her underhanded cohorts Broderick Crawford and Mischa Auer. During her next stopover at the Seven Sinners Cafe, Dietrich meets handsome Naval officer John Wayne. He falls in love with her, much to the consternation of island governor Samuel S. Hinds, who knows that any romantic entanglement with Dietrich invariably results in dissension, disarray and brawls. He tells her to lay off Wayne or she'll be deported. But Dietrich insists upon performing one last song for the Duke...and sure as shootin', a battle royal ensues. This time, however, Wayne works tirelessly behind the scenes to solve everyone's problems. Maintaining the fascination level of Seven Sinners is a limitless array of top character actors, including Oscar Homolka, Billy Gilbert, Albert Dekker and Reginald Denny. The film was remade in 1950 as South Sea Sinner, starring Shelley Winters and--are you holding on to something?--Liberace. ...Seven Sinners (1940) ( Café of the Seven Sinners )

another little gem 6 Dec 2011

Cinema lost greatly when it lost the combination of Wayne and Dietrich. As in 'Pittsburgh', the on screen chemistry is evident. The ease of performance is also worth viewing.

Big John meets Marlene 5 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Marlene plays one of those Sadie Thompson parts - she is Blanch who has been deported from every island in the south seas. She ends up at the Seven Sinners Cafe where she falls ih love with a handsome sailor played by Wayne and gets to sing a couple of greaty Frank Loesser songs, I've Been in Love Before, and dressed appropriately, The Man's in the Navy. He is, of course, too young, too innocent, and too devoted to the sea for the affair to prosper - his first love is the Navy. But while her heart is broken she is a survivor. Once again Mischa Auer has a lovely timne playing a rogue and there are a splendid punch up for Wayne to - or his stand in - to take part in at the end. They actually made two films together and are not ideal pairing but it works.

1st class! 10 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved this film. I'm a huge fan of Marlene Dietrich & this is my favourite film that I have seen her in so far. The script is really well suited to her & the songs are great. Which other Hollywood female star could get away with singing in full male navy attire & still look stunning? John Wayne also puts in a good performance here, despite looking almost too dazzled to act every time Dietrich appears (probably due to their real life fling at the time!) ... Top class film. If you're considering buying it I would say don't hesitate!
