Product Description

London. May 1889. After discovering the identity of Jack the Ripper and preventing a diplomatic incident involving Otto Von Bismarck, Cullen Moffat and John Batchelor set up a private investigation company in the heart of Soho, London.

Cullen meets his old Colonel from the Crimea who is now Head of The Liverpool Cotton Association. The Colonel needs their help and engages them to investigate a problem in his offices. They travel to Liverpool and inadvertently stumble upon murder and intrigue in the cotton trade. A deteriorating situation leads them from Liverpool to New Orleans and involves both The White House and Downing Street.

Once again, Cullen Moffat's experience as a military policeman is utilised, aided and assisted by John Batchelor's unconventional social manners and Uriah Garrett's journalistic skills. With time running out, can they prevent an international incident which threatens to bring down both the American and British Government.

A competent sequel... 17 Dec 2011

Seven Mile Avenue continues the adventure of Cullen, Garrett & Batchelor started in 'The Whitechapel Murders - (TWM)'. It continues to weave a decent plot line and sub-plots to maintain interest. I said in my review of 'The Whitechapel Murders' that it was never going to win any literary awards and the same applies to this novel. It's competently written and like the first novel moves at a cracking pace. We find out a bit more about the characters and then it's almost like the novel splits in two. From roughly halfway through the novel Cullen and Garrett disappear, there's little contact with them until virtually the end of the book. There's a brief appearance by a Washington police inspector who's intervention isn't adequately explained. Some of the book appears rushed and implausible particularly toward the end. The ex secret service majors end is almost guarenteed as is his subsequent posthumous redemption but the similarity to Alberts end in TWM is uncanny. I also don't like the character of Garrett he comes across as a vile individual and I wasn't that bothered when he disappeared for half the book.

That said, still a cracking read, and again whiled away a few hours whilst travelling. Unfortunately Rob Hamilton hasn't written anymore stories involving Cullen and Batchelor (or at least they're not in the Amazon Catalogue). It's a pity really as he has characters with potential and in TWM he alluded to Batchelor (who appears to writing these Watson style memoirs at a point in the future looking back over his life) having a number of stories to tell.

It would be a real shame to end the series now.

Having read this book straight after the first Cullen/Batchelor title, I found myself becoming really irritated by the amount of whiskey downed in one-they seemed to be at it morning, noon and night, and it was almost like some form of punctuation-not sure what I want my characters to do now! Hummmmm! Bring out the booze! I found this spoilt my enjoyment of a good, uncomplicated yarn. I am surprised that the editor did not pick up on it.

I did enjoy the sections set in Liverpool; my home city and I 'followed' the cabs along streets well remembered from my childhood.

I hope there are more books in this series, particularly as the author gave the readers the 'taster' at the end of the first title-what happened to the characters!

Having read of the trial of Florence Maybrick and also the book about the discovery of the Maybrick Ripper Diaries in Liverpool I really enjoyed the novel Rob Hamilton combined his imagination with these things to produce about the Whitechapel Murders.

This is the follow-up novel to the first one and Rob Hamilton does not let the reader down.

Unlike some other e-books I have read where the first novel is free or cheap and the follow up a few pounds more, these two books were both 99p.

I started reading Seven Mile Avenue while my baby grandson was got ready for a day trip to Blackpool and read half the book on the outward journey while the baby sat in a baby seat next to me (Nana) in the rear of the car. He slept, I read.

I was deserted for a while baby was taken for his feed and change and his solo time with Mum and Dad - actually I was sitting in a cafe, walking stick alongside, having a rest and reading interrupted only by people asking "Oh, is that one of those Kindle things ? " - think I sold them all on the idea.

Later travelling home in the car I read on watched by baby peeping at me from under his eyelashes.

I finished the book in time to help with baby's tea time feed.

So you can tell how much I enjoyed the book. Others have described the plot - it is exciting with twists and turns.

I am going to order other books by Rob Hamilton. Especially at these economic prices.
