3.0 out of 5 stars How I beat the entire Italian army single handed, 8 Jul 2008
An interesting South African production about the war in East Africa, based on an actual event. The movie is from a purely SA perspective (i.e. no Blerrie Engelse anywhere in sight). It was made in the sixties - the excreable tinny sound track confirms this. Poor sound recording was a typical Killarney Film Studios shortcoming for many years. However, put aside the technical shortcomings and the James Ambrose Brown screenplay is workmanlike - if rather wordy. Stereotypically there is the obligatory stiff upper lipped young officer (Hayter), the reluctant conscript (O'Shaunessey) and the platoon coward (van den Berg), amongst many others - you identify them all (no prizes). However, everyone finally pulls together to ensure the downfall of the dastardly Italians (wot? no Nazis?). The uniforms and equipment of both sides are accurately portrayed, except for the bombing and strafing scenes. Dear, oh dear - what was that papier mache Italian aircraft supposed to be? Anyway a diverting movie, worth watching if only to see WWII from a differnt angle for a change.
