Book Description

Once or twice a generation, an athlete transcends his sport - at last, here's Seve in his own words

Product Description

There are golfers, and there are golfers. And then there's Seve.

Severiano Ballesteros is perhaps the most naturally gifted golfer ever to have walked a fairway. From the moment his brother Manuel gave him his first club - a 3 iron - he was unstoppable; he played shots others could only dream of. A few weeks before his seventeenth birthday he turned pro. Five years later he won the Open. A year after that he became the first European ever to win the Masters. A genius had arrived.

For the best part of two decades Seve dominated the golfing landscape. With 94 wins to date as a professional (including 5 Majors), 6 European Order of Merit titles and the No. 1 position in the Official World Golf Rankings, he became a sporting phenomenon, an athlete who transcended - and still transcends - his sport.

But Seve stands for more than simple excellence. Almost single-handedly, Seve gave European golf credibility; almost single-handedly, he made the Ryder Cup one of the greatest contests in world sport. And when, as captain, he finally lifted the trophy on home soil in 1997, a whole continent rejoiced. His pride and passion have inspired millions, and we have taken him to our hearts.

Now, for the first time, Seve tells his story. From his humble beginnings right up to the present day, here at last is the man behind the magic in his own words. Like its author, Seve is utterly entertaining, blazingly charismatic and unique; and, like its author, it wears its heart on its sleeve. But Seve is more than Seve the golfing magician, Seve the proud family man, and Seve the fierce patriot. It is, simply, 'Seve'.

Honest biography 14 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book. Anyone who has been interested in golf in the last 30 years will know much about Seve and his trials and tribulations...

You feel like this book is really in Seve's own words and not spun into a story by a ghost writer. It's slightly unusual in that it is not chronologically sequenced but jumps around from experience to incident as they occur to him. This makes you feel rather like you are sat in a room with him and he is just recounting what comes into his head that day. It doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the book though.

Seve has always been known as determined and headstrong characted and this really comes through in the book. He recounts many of his disputes with both the European and PGA tours and it would be interesting to hear the other side of the story on these. Like Arnold before and Greg Norman and Tiger have done since, Seve upped the ante in many ways and allowed the players to earn much more from the game than they otherwise would have done.

Let's hope that Seve will continue to recover from his recent problems and at least be able to make an appearance (even if he is just able to stand on the bridge) at this years Open. There won't be a dry eye in the house....

Well worth a read.

Having read this book I now understand the larger than life character of Seve, iron will that made one of the worlds greatest sportsmen. His strong sence of family and right over wrong endeared me to him.
I recomend this book to all budding sportsmen and women so they can understand dedication and love of their sport.
